Fusion Drive is a type of hybrid drive developed by Apple. Physically, these are two different devices: a regular large-capacity disk and a separate solid state media, combined into one logical volume. Fusion Drive combines the advantages of a conventional mechanical hard drive and a solid state drive: high speed with a large available volume and a relatively low price.

To build a Fusion Drive, your iMac needs an additional PCIe media connector. Unfortunately, if at the time of purchase you chose the option without a Fusion Drive or SSD drive, there may not be such a connector. For example, it is missing from all 21.5” iMacs equipped with a mechanical drive by default. But the 27" screen models have this connector, and it's waiting for you to put something in there!

If your iMac doesn't have one, don't despair. Instead of a single HDD, you can install a SATA SSD and achieve similar read / write speeds.

Can I install a second hard drive in a "thin" iMac?

If the iMac has a slot for an SSD, then after installation you can not combine the two media into one, but use it separately by installing the system on a fast SSD. In this case, the system gains a little in performance, but you will have to regularly clean up and transfer large files to a mechanical disk.

Is it possible to increase the amount of RAM in "thin" iMac?

Aimak 27″: even a child can increase memory. There is a cover on the back side, and under it there are 4 RAM expansion slots. Two of them are occupied by modules, usually 4 GB each. The maximum volume depends on the modification, but 32 GB, that is, 4 modules of 8 GB each, can be installed exactly. For iMac generations from Late 2012 to Mid 2015, PC3-12800 DDR3 SO-DIMM memory is suitable, and newer PC3-14900 DDR3 (Late 2015) or PC4-19200 DDR4 (starting from Mid 2017).

Aimak 21.5″: everything is not so simple, but not hopeless. Firstly, not all such iMacs have RAM expansion slots at all (they are not in the iMac 21.5 ”Mid 2014 and Late 2015). And in other modifications there are connectors, but it is difficult to get to them: you have to “cut off” and re-glue the display, it is not easy to do this work on your own.

The new iMac all-in-one with a 5K display of the year is considered one of the best solutions for the money. However, it has one big problem - 8 GB of RAM in the minimum configuration, which is clearly not enough for full-fledged work. Luckily, adding RAM to your iMac is pretty easy.

The iMac 5K has four DIMM slots with a total capacity of 64 GB. In the minimum configuration, the user receives two 4 GB DDR4 platters, which gives a total of 8 GB. 64 GB is quite a lot, so it is advisable to buy a couple more 16 GB sticks, resulting in 40 GB of RAM. This is more than enough to work with Final Cut Pro X and other professional software.

RAM requirements:

SO-DIMMs must meet the following criteria:

  • PC4-2400.
  • No buffering.
  • No parity.
  • 204 contacts.
  • DDR4 SDRAM, 2400 MHz.

How to upgrade RAM in iMac 5K 2017

It should be borne in mind that the instructions are relevant only for iMac 5K 2017. Although the 21.5-inch model has modules that are not soldered to the board, removing the plates is not so easy and it is better not to do it yourself.

Step 1: Turn off your iMac and unplug all cables, including the power cable.

Step 2: Lay your iMac face down on a flat surface such as a table. To prevent the display from being scratched, you can lay a towel on it.

Step 3. Press the button above the power connector to open the memory module compartment.

Step 4: Remove the compartment cover.

Step 5. Press the DIMM release levers to open the RAM slots.

Step 6. If you bought four modules, you will have to get the already installed plates. If you only have two new modules, you can leave out the existing ones. Place the new RAM platters in the appropriate slots. Please note that the notch of the module should be closer to the right edge.

Step 7. Return the locking levers to their original position.

Step 8 Replace the compartment cover.

Step 9: Turn over your iMac.

Step 10 Connect all necessary cables and turn on your iMac.

Step 11. After booting up, go to the Apple menu -> About This Mac -> Memory and make sure that the system correctly detected all the memory modules.

Total

Apple offers an upgrade to 16, 32 or 64 GB of RAM in iMac for 14,000, 42,000 and 98,000 rubles, respectively. If you order third-party RAM, you can save about 50,000 rubles.

There is not much memory

I am sure that any user of a Windows PC knows such a postulate as "there is never too much RAM." Yes, Microsoft's operating system is a notable RAM eater, but Mac OS-based machines are no less notable consumers of it. Of course, the lack of this resource in Apple computers is not so pronounced - there are usually no wild brakes, but the general slowdown in the OS is not difficult to notice. Applications start slower, often a spinning icon appears to tell you what the system is “thinking”, etc.

Accordingly, the more RAM in the PC, the better. If the computer was purchased in those primeval times when RAM bars were worth their weight in gold, then now is the time to change them to something more capacious, the price of memory has long been within reasonable limits, although this cannot be said about the original components offered by Apple. I don’t know what the “magic” is here, but often ordering additional hardware modules from Apple or creating an individual configuration can cost many times more than upgrading standard model on one's own. In addition, custom-made Apple machines in Russia, Ukraine and other countries of the post-Soviet space cost truly insane money. So, let's do the upgrade on our own, especially since it is done very easily, although certain rules should be followed, which we will discuss below.

Do you follow safety rules?

These rules are universal for any modification of RAM (and other expansion cards too), whether on a PC, Mac or laptops, regardless of the manufacturer.

Rule number 1 - no static electricity. Static "kills" RAM in the blink of an eye - one spark and the module can be hung on the wall as a sad reminder of personal carelessness when working with delicate computer hardware. It is necessary not only to remove static voltage, but also, if possible, not to “charge” in the short period of time that it takes to approach the computer. It is worth touching unpainted metal with your finger, a water tap, or you can lower it under a stream of water. It is advisable to take off woolen socks, a sweater, synthetic clothes that are well electrified. All this, perhaps, is a kind of paranoia, but it didn’t let me down personally, and usually any modifications took place without incidents on my part, and there were dozens, if not hundreds of them (not only I updated my hardware for many years of working with PCs). Another precaution is to try not to take the memory bar by the chips, but rather take it by the printed circuit board along the edges. It is also not recommended to pass the bar from hand to hand, holding on to the chips.

Rule number 2 - no need to make significant efforts when removing and installing memory modules. It is clear that, if desired, you can insert anything and anywhere, but after that the device may refuse to work (I met with cases when people somehow managed to "hammer" the memory module on the wrong side, or plug an AGP card into the slot PCIe).

Now you are ready to upgrade your iMac. In general, installing memory into most thin Apple all-in-ones based on Intel processors is the same. There are only slight differences in the design of the slat compartment. 2006 iMac models (beginning, middle, end) have one bay with two SO-DIMM memory slots stacked one above the other. Mid-2007 and later monoblocks have two bays with four slots for RAM sticks. In both cases, the compartments are located on the bottom of the device, covered with a special plug, which is fixed with two or three screws, respectively. To unscrew them, you need to use a Phillips No. 2 square screwdriver. By the way, the screws are fixed on the plug and you should not be afraid that they will fall out of it and get lost.

Getting Started with Modernization

Before proceeding with the RAM upgrade process, you need to prepare workplace. For this, a clean table covered with a soft cloth will do, which will prevent scratches on the display. Or, instead of a cloth, you can use the porous packaging material that iMac was wrapped in when it was still in a beautiful cardboard box. I worked with him. Place the iMac face down on a cloth or packing material. You can take it by the side edges and gently put it, or by the stand, and the latter option seems to me more convenient and easier. After that, you need to lift the stand up to gain access to the RAM bay cover.

Unscrewing two bolts, in the case of older iMac models, we will get access to the RAM modules held by two plastic latches.

Even if you plan to just add an additional module without removing what is already installed, the plastic latches still need to be bent to the sides. After that, you can add another module or install two new ones. It is necessary to insert the strips until they click, they should enter easily (a little effort is applied at the end to click). Pay attention to the connector on the memory module - it consists of two parts. The smaller one should be on the left. After the modules are installed - return the latches to their original position - this is done with a little effort, which is normal. But it is better to see once than to read many times, respectively, watch the video:

On mid-2007 and later iMacs, including the latest aluminum ones, ejecting the memory sticks is a little different. The photos below (and the first two above) show a 21.5-inch machine. After unscrewing three screws and opening the RAM bay, you will find a pair of modules covered by a pair of flexible tabs made of a material resembling photographic film.

They are easily removed (just pry with a screwdriver or nails, if any, and pull towards you), providing access to the memory strips, but that's not all.

It is necessary to firmly grasp the tongue with your fingers and pull it towards you. I don’t know how it is in other copies, but in what I had the good fortune to disassemble, I had to make considerable efforts. There were even fears that the tongue would simply come off, but this did not happen. With a slight click, the memory stick popped out a couple of millimeters from its slot.

After that, it can be easily removed with your fingers. As you can see, this is a regular DDR3 PC8500 module manufactured by Samsung. There is no magic and not even an apple logo.

And here is an empty footprint, freed from the burden of RAM:

For more clarity, watch the video:

In terms of compatibility, any standard 1066 MHz DDR3 (PC3-8500, no buffering, parity, or ECC) modules up to 4 GB will work for the latest iMac models (that is, the total amount of RAM can be up to 16 GB). It is advisable to take something branded from Samsung, Kingston, Hynix and other well-known manufacturers.

You can read more about compatibility with memory modules in 2007 and 2008 models on the Apple website. Official compatibility information for earlier models can be found here.

Happy upgrading!
