Photo contest “The Most Beautiful Country” - a large-scale event of the Russian Geographical Society, uniting best photographers Russia.
The Russian Geographical Society has always strived to tell about the nature, history and culture of our country. For this, the best writers, artists, journalists and, of course, photographers were involved.
The first Photo Contest was held in 2015. 25 thousand photographers from all over the world took part in it, uploading about 200 thousand photographs to the project website. The oldest participant in the first Photo Contest was 98 years old, and the youngest was only 4 years old.
In just five years of the competition’s existence, participants sent more than 440 thousand photographs to it.
The project caused a great public outcry and became an annual project, and exhibitions of the works of its finalists and winners are successfully exhibited all over the world.
Works submitted to the Photo Competition are evaluated by a Jury, which includes famous public figures, famous photographers and representatives of the art world. The initial selection of photographs is carried out by an Expert Commission, whose work involves reputable photographers and heads of the largest photographic services in the country.

Today, May 29, a jury meeting took place at the Moscow Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society.
The annual photo competition "The Most Beautiful Country" is a large-scale media project of the Russian Geographical Society dedicated to the conservation wildlife Russia and fostering a caring attitude towards environment. There are no restrictions on the age or place of residence of participants in the competition rules. The main condition is that the photographs must be taken only on the territory of Russia.
The competition works were evaluated by the President of the Russian Geographical Society Sergei Shoigu, producer, CEO OJSC "Channel One" Konstantin Ernst, director Andrei Konchalovsky, art critic, general director of the Tretyakov Gallery Zelfira Tregulova, sculptor and artist Dashi Namdakov, famous photographers Ivan Kurinnoy, Denis Budkov, Andrei Narchuk. The chairman of the jury, as in previous years, was famous photographer wildlife Sergey Gorshkov.
The jury members selected the winners in the categories “Indigenous and small peoples of Russia”, “Russia in persons”, “Landscape”, “Wild animals”, “Birds”, “Underwater world”, “Bird’s eye view of Russia”, “Cultural heritage” , “The world is in our hands”, “Caves”, “Macroworld”, “These funny animals”. In addition, it was determined best job young photographer under the age of 16.
“We chose three photographs out of ten in each category, but often it was possible to choose five best photographs,” emphasized Konstantin Ernst. “It seems to me that having such high quality photographs, the Russian Geographical Society can distribute its annual photo album around the world so that not only residents of our country, but also foreigners can see the unique beauty of Russia."
"Photo - amazing view art, which allows those who have vision, a sense of taste and professionalism to isolate some interesting angles, moments, motives and arrange it all in the camera window,” noted Zelfira Tregulova. – This is truly a rare form of realization of that creativity and that aesthetic sense that so many people have. And when we're talking about about photographing rare predators or diving under water, then this is also a kind of overcoming oneself, which not everyone is capable of.”
Andrei Konchalovsky noted that photographs that captured moments of life inner world person, character, emotion of a situation, more interesting than just beautiful portraits or landscapes. The director also emphasized that when evaluating children's photographs, he paid attention not so much to aesthetics, but to the child's ability to see the world from an unusual angle, inaccessible to an adult.
“Someone runs through volcanoes, someone watches for a bear at the exit of a den, someone practically does not rise from under the water for three years to photograph strange sea animals, something that no one has yet been able to do. And all this is dedicated to this to show how beautiful nature, people, and history of our country are,” summed up President of the Russian Geographical Society Sergei Shoigu.
Sergei Shoigu proposed holding a separate photo competition for children starting next year, as well as introducing a new category into the “Most Beautiful Country” competition - amateur photography taken in mobile phone. This means that next year not only owners of professional photographic equipment, but also owners of smartphones will be able to take part in the creative competition.

Let us remind you that the IV photo competition “The Most Beautiful Country” was held from December 19, 2017 to April 3, 2018. The portal received more than 45 thousand images. The jury meeting was preceded by the work of an expert commission, whose members spent a month and a half selecting photographs of the finalists.
The selection of the works of finalists and winners took place anonymously - when evaluating the photographs, experts and jury members saw only the photographs themselves, but not the names of their authors.
