The best reader for a computer windows 7. Book reader for a computer - An overview of the best programs. In addition, among the features of the application there are

There are people who do not like reading books from the screens of electronic devices, and they still prefer paper. I, on the contrary, have always preferred to read books from the screen. This seemed more convenient to me even when there was nothing but desktop computers, and became even more convenient when PDAs began to appear first, and then smartphones with large screens and tablets.

Today I found the time and decided to put together in an article a selection of the best applications for reading books in my opinion for the main operating systems - Android, iOS, Windows.

A good e-book reader - what is it?

What are my quality requirements for e-book readers?

Like these ones:

  • Support for all common formats
    A reader that supports only ePub or only MOBI formats is not needed. A normal book reader app should support at least ePub, FB2, Mobi, DjVu and PDF. It is also desirable that it skillfully work with books in archives, as well as .doc, .rtf and .txt files - otherwise there are still only ones who digitize books into office document formats instead of specialized book formats.
  • Support for different reading modes
    A good book reader should support at least the change of "day" and "night" reading mode, and even better - have a lot of skins that allow you to choose the most comfortable color scheme for specific lighting conditions. Black text on a white background with no options is the last century.
  • Support for OPDS catalogs and cloud storage
    A good book reader should support at least OPDS catalogs, and preferably cloud storage as well. I want to download new books to a smartphone or tablet in a couple of taps on the screen from my cloud or the Flibusta OPDS catalog, and not transfer them manually from a computer.
  • Interface for people
    Technologies are developing, approaches to the design of application interfaces are changing. And the design of applications that seemed appropriate in 2009 is already wildly hurting the eye today. A good book reader has not only good functionality, but also a convenient minimalist interface in the spirit of the times.
  • Nothing extra
    I do not need the reader, in addition to the function of reading books, to offer me to register in some service or impose my own bookstore. If the application does not have any extra features, this is a plus for it. If there is - respectively, in the minus.

I have few quality criteria, but it's not so easy to find an application that meets at least 3 out of 5 criteria.

The best book readers for Android

Finding a normal book reader on Android is another task. There are countless number of readers for Android released, but most of them are rubbish.

Having tried probably all the applications for reading books available on Google Play, I could only find two normal ones.

FBReader Premium

FBReader Premium is the most functional book reader ever created for Android OS.

This application is omnivorous in terms of book formats (it even reads comic book files), supports working with OPDS catalogs and works smartly on any, even very outdated Android devices. Displays bookshelf in Google's signature Material Design style. There is a night mode.

It is important not to confuse the regular FBReader and its Premium version. The usual FBReader is obsolete, has a terrible design, and support for PDF and DjVu formats is carried out through the installation of separate “crutches”. Horror.

The disadvantages of the premium version of FBReader include its payment.

For using the program you need to pay 199 rubles (as of the date of publication of this note). Well, or download a cracked .apk file from some warez site.

eReader Prestigio

The eReader Prestigio reader was created on the basis of the usual FBReader as a pre-installed application for smartphones and tablets of the Prestigio brand, and later became available to everyone on Google Play.

Taking the FBReader engine as a basis, the developers have redesigned the interface so that these two applications do not look a bit like each other in appearance, and nothing hints that one of them is the progenitor of the other.

eReader Prestigio supports all book formats and has the most beautiful bookshelf of any Android book reader app. Also, the developers have made a chic animation of turning pages, thanks to which the feeling of reading books in eReader Prestigio is similar to the feeling of reading paper books. Night mode is also present.

Of the minuses, it should be noted the cut out support for OPDS catalogs and the integration of some half-dead e-book store. However, the developers themselves recognized the idea of a bookstore as a failure and began to slowly remove this function and eReader.

If it is important for you to have access to OPDS catalogs digital libraries directly from the book reader interface, then look towards FBReader Premium.

In all other cases, eReader Prestigio - definitely the best choice on the Android platform. It's free, convenient and beautiful.

The best book readers for iOS

Best of all, the situation with book readers is on iOS. They are few, but they are all good.

Kybook 2

The KyBook 2 application is a real combine, and among all its functions, none can be called useless, far-fetched.

Able to read books of all formats, generates beautiful and visual bookshelves. Supports work with OPDS catalogs and almost any cloud storage. It has a convenient and thoughtful interface in which the user can customize the color of literally every element.

The program is free, with the ability to upgrade to the PRO version through an internal purchase, the cost of which is 299 rubles at the moment. In the PRO version, the advertising banner at the bottom of the screen disappears and additional functions appear - in particular, a built-in Tor client through which you can access Flibuste and other electronic libraries blocked in the Russian Federation.

All in all, a dream app. The only downside is that it only exists for iOS. The developer stubbornly does not want to port his reader to other platforms, and it's a pity: there would be no price for KyBook for Windows and Android.

iBooks

The stock iBooks app comes preinstalled by default on all iOS and macOS devices.

The iBooks reader supports only two formats - PDF and ePub, and also generates a beautiful bookshelf for accessing books. The program is completely free, has a minimalistic interface and does not contain any distracting banners. You can change fonts and switch to one of three reading modes - day, night and sepia.

The main advantage of iBooks is its integration into the Apple ecosystem, thanks to which books are easily and conveniently synchronized via the iCloud cloud to all iPhones, iPads and MacBooks owned by the user.

Caliber

Caliber is a powerful harvester for organizing.

It would be wrong to call it a book reader, since the main task of this application is to organize the storage of electronic books with a flexible search by tags, authors and other data. As well as editing books and converting them from one format to another.

But the book reader is also present in its composition. She is omnivorous and understands any format. In terms of convenience, it cannot compete with the same Fiction Book Reader, but nevertheless, it is quite possible to use it - and this is far from the worst option that is available for use under Windows.

Sumatra PDF

Sumatra PDF is a fast, simple and user-friendly program, originally designed to read PDF files, but later learned to also open e-books in all common formats.

Able to open several files in parallel in different tabs. Remembers open files after shutdown. It can work in a portable version, without installation.

The main advantage of Sumatra PDF is its speed. It should be installed at least as a replacement for the slow Adobe Acrobat Reader for reading PDF.

The application is absolutely free.

Conclusion

Here is a selection the best programs e-book reader I have developed over the years of reading on different platforms.

The best app for reading e-books this moment- definitely KyBook 2. It's a pity that it exists only for iOS.

Under Windows, my personal favorite is Fiction Book Reader.

And under Android, I still couldn’t decide for myself which is better, FBReader Premium or eReader Prestigio, so I have both readers installed on my tablet.

Which, by the way, is also quite an option: in one, some kind of technical literature, and in the other - an art book.

Reading books in electronic form on a computer is not very convenient. To make this process comfortable, special programs (readers) are created with different features and features that minimize discomfort and eye strain. This is important for those users who do not have a tablet or e-books (special small devices for reading like a tablet). Today we will look at the famous and most frequently downloaded programs for Windows 10.

Tools for reading books on Windows 10: choose the best

The choice of programs for reading literature on a Windows 10 PC is quite wide, despite the fact that many utilities have headed for Android and iOS mobile operating systems. Today we will choose best options, which offer maximum features, free use and a clear interface.

The ICE Book Reader Professional service does not have many competitors in terms of the number of functions. This free Russian-language reader with many subtle settings that make it stand out from the general background of similar programs allows you to:

AlReader: a simple reader that does not need to be installed on a PC

Unfortunately, a Russian-language tool called AlReader cannot boast of wide functionality. Nevertheless, it has everything you need for reading: support for fb2, rtf, epub, odt and others formats, as well as interface customization (background color, graphic themes, text style and brightness, hyphenation, indentation, etc.). A huge plus of this reader is that it does not need to be installed on a computer. You simply download the file from the official site, and then run it - the program will be immediately ready for use.

EPUBReader: Comfortable reading of epub files

The name of the program speaks for itself: it is intended only for reading epub files. The advantage of this format is that it takes up little space on the media, but is capable of displaying tables, unusual fonts, and vector graphics. The EPUBReader tool also changes the format of books (converts) epub to pdf, html or txt. The developer of the utility is the FreeSmart company. The program can be installed not only on Windows 10, but also on smartphones based on Android and Apple devices.

In the EPUBReader window, it is convenient to navigate through the sections of the book

In EPUBReader, you can quickly move from section to section thanks to convenient navigation in the left column of the window, as well as adjust the font and text scale. The functionality of the program is not as wide as that of ICE Book Reader Professional or Caliber, but this is offset by a convenient and intuitive interface. If you only need to open epub files, this reader is great option For you.

The reader tool must be loaded from .

FBReader: a handy tool with access to online libraries

If you're looking for a versatile yet simple tool for reading books in a variety of formats, take a look at FBReader. This tool opens epub, mobi, fb2, html, rtf, plucker, chm and other files.

The utility has access to network libraries. In some of them, you can download books of various topics and genres for free. There are also paid libraries - the FBReader tool allows you to buy books there, that is, you will not need to go to the seller's website separately.

All added books are distributed on the shelves automatically according to genre and author's name. FBReader has a clear and user-friendly interface, which even nothing can understand knowledgeable newbie. In the window, you can customize the background color, font, page turning method, etc.

This tool also has a drawback: it does not provide a two-page mode.

LightLib: read books from Librusek

The LightLib utility is both a librarian and a reader, according to the official resource of this program, from which you can download the installer.

In addition, as in any other reader, in LightLib you can customize the appearance of the window, as well as preview the book and add files to the Favorites folder.

LightLib is both a library and a reader

Cool Reader: a functional tool with the option to unpack files from an archive

Cool Reader is one of the most convenient readers. She takes care of your eyes with the following options:

  • smoothing and changing fonts;
  • setting up a textured background;
  • smooth scrolling.

In addition to reading most book formats (txt, doc, fb2, rtf, epub and others), the utility can also:

Adobe Reader: classic pdf reader

It is difficult to find a user who has not heard of the Adobe Reader utility, as it is the most popular tool for reading and viewing pdf files. It is suitable not only for documents, but also for reading fiction, textbooks and magazines.

The following options are available in the program:

Download the utility installer from the official website.

DjVuViewer: A simple djvu reader

The DjVuViewer utility is one of the standard tools for opening djvu files. This format is better than pdf in that it saves space in the PC memory due to better file compression. The program has the following advantages:

The file tool can be downloaded from its official page.

Foxit Reader: Alternative to Adobe Reader

Like Adobe Reader, Foxit is designed to view and read pdf documents and books. Its advantage is that it requires much less hard disk space to install. In addition to reading, here you can also:

The program is available for download on the official website.

Video: where to download Foxit Reader and how to install it

One of the most functional readers today are ICE Book Reader Professional, Caliber and Cool Reader. They not only allow you to read text in comfortable conditions and minimize the risk of damaging your eyesight, but also convert files into the formats you need, provide access to extensive databases. More simple, but no less good are LightLib, FBReader and AlReader. In addition, there are readers for one format, for example, EPUBReader or Adobe Reader. Choose a tool depending on the file formats you download to read.

You can read an e-book on almost any mobile device, but it is more comfortable to do it from the large screen of a PC or laptop. It is this circumstance that supports the popularity of specialized reading programs. Today we're going to take a look at the best free e-readers for Windows, comparing their features and ease of use.

A modern e-book is not just text. It contains chapter markers, footnotes, and illustrations. All these features fully support only three formats:

  • ePub (Electronic Publication) - international and most common;
  • fb2/fb3 (Fiction Book) - created by domestic programmers and widely used only in Runet;
  • azw3/Mobi - Amazon Kindle native reader formats.

We will conduct testing based on the fact that any considered reader for Windows should be able to work with them. Additional features, such as support for plain or formatted text files, will count as a nice bonus.

Liberty Book Reader

The first program in the review is available in the official Windows Store. Books can be purchased online or downloaded from your own collection. Given that we are considering free programs, in-app purchases will not be taken into account.

The interface corresponds to the description and is completely made in Russian. There is nothing superfluous in the main window of Liberty. In addition to the standard control buttons, another one has been added to switch to full screen mode. Downloading books from local storage is done in one simple step. As stated by the developers, the epub and fb2 formats are correctly recognized.

Basic settings are available in reading mode:

  • text alignment;
  • day/night mode change;
  • four-way navigation: page, bookmark, note, table of contents;
  • font type selection;
  • change of presentation mode: single page, spread, scroll.

You can adjust the screen brightness and margins. Your selections are saved as a separate style that you can return to. Control elements are called by analogy with the context menu and are automatically hidden after performing the operations required by the user.

Periodically, the program gives an error, after closing which it continues to work.

As a standard Windows reader available for installation from the app store, Liberty gets the job done.

Cool Reader

Cool Reader for Windows can be downloaded as a zip file. The program does not require installation. It is enough to unzip the archive and run the exe file. To add books, you must manually specify the folder in which they are located. Implemented access to online catalogs. Presets contain links only to English-language materials, but the user can add the required resource on his own. The interface language is switched in the settings. To enable the Russian version of the help, you must manually add a document from the internal directory of the program:

cr3\res\manuals\manual_template_ru

Inside the program, books are sorted using predefined filters: by file name, author, title or series. In addition to basic settings the user can change the animation when scrolling through the pages or turn on the reading aloud mode.

Owners of touchscreen laptops will be pleased to have touchscreen support included in the program. A separate help section is devoted to using the touchscreen capabilities.

Books in the tested formats were recognized correctly. In fb2 reading mode, footnotes are placed at the bottom of the general text on the page. The solution is convenient and allows the user not to be distracted by additional navigation through the menu.

For a program that doesn't even install, Cool Reader for Windows is impressive.

AlReader

AlReader is positioned as an fb2 reader for Windows. The "Librarian" function is designed to scan a directory specified by the user and automatically add the detected files of this format to the program database. Recognized books are immediately available for reading. Adding epub files, with which the program can also work, is done manually.

The settings are divided into separate blocks and placed on the top panel of the main window. Users who find it more convenient to work with the graphical menu can place its panel below the main one. You can fix it in this position permanently or only in full screen mode.

Reading fb2 with notes is implemented on two levels. It is possible to place them as footnotes on the page or go to a selected section of the book. Reverse navigation to the main text works by pressing one button. For epub, only a quick return from the notes area is implemented.

The settings allow you to completely reconfigure all the parameters of the displayed text. The selected book can be converted directly in the program into an unmarked text format or an HTML file. The first is accepted by Kindle readers, and the second can be dispensed with without reading programs. Any browser opens such a document.

AlReader could claim the title of "the best fb2 reader for Windows", but since 2011 the program has not been updated. So far, it copes with its task, but the convenience of the interface leaves much to be desired.

ICE Book Reader

The next program that hit the top of the Windows readers was ICE Book Reader Pro. For residents of the post-Soviet space, it is free. The "professional" prefix in the title is intended to attract foreign users.

When installed, ICE Book integrates into the system, taking over the work with e-book formats. It cannot be said that the program is an ideal fb2 and epub reader for Windows. Appearance it has a rather specific, and the scrolling mode used is resource-demanding.

Its popularity is based on the prevalence of the formats used and the built-in conversion capabilities. Comparing the level of support for free readers for Windows, we can say that ICE Book has the most complete help system.

Fully Russian-language help describes in detail the options for settings aimed at achieving maximum program performance.

STDU Viewer

STDU Viewer is another universal Windows reader included in our review. The only one of the reviewed programs that works not only with the old (mobi), but also with the new (azw) Kindle format. STDU is distributed in a similar way to ICE Book. For private use, the program is available free of charge. When registering, you must specify an e-mail and check the box for non-commercial use.

A feature of STDU is its integration with common formats for storing scanned documents, which are used to create electronic versions of paper textbooks. The program is able to export the material contained in them in the "text" or "picture" modes. Extraction is performed by whole pages or separate information blocks.

Exported materials immediately adapt to the standard paper format, which allows you to print them like regular office documents. As a result, the program can be used not only for reading, but also for working with electronic versions paper media. The implemented ability to work with tabs is also intended for the same purpose. In the main window, you can open several documents and, switching between them, search and retrieve information.

The user is invited to master the work of the built-in tools on their own. Help on functions is missing not only in Russian, but also in English.

As an epub reader for Windows, it recognizes the book's format and table of contents, while not allowing you to follow internal links leading to notes. The universality of working with formats in this case led to a deterioration in quality.

Finally

Having considered the best readers for Windows, you can do following conclusions. For its intended use, the Cool Reader program is best adapted. In second place in terms of convenience is AlReader. On the third - Liberty. Universal readers ICE and STDU are best used as editing and information extraction tools.

Good afternoon.

Who just did not predict the end of books with the beginning of development computer technology. However, progress is progress, but books both lived and live (and will live). It's just that everything has changed somewhat - electronic folios have come to replace paper folios.

And this, I must say, has its advantages: on the most ordinary computer or tablet (on Android), more than one thousand books can fit, each of which can be opened and read in a matter of seconds; there is no need to keep a large closet in the house to store them - everything fits on a PC disk; in electronic video, it is convenient to make bookmarks and reminders, etc.

The best e-book readers (*.fb2, *.txt, *.doc, *.pdf, *.djvu and more)

For Windows

Several useful and convenient "readers" that will help you immerse yourself in the process of absorbing another book while sitting at your computer.

Cool Reader

One of the most common programs for both Windows and Android (although in my opinion, for the latter, there are programs that are more convenient, but about them below).

Of the main features:

  • supports formats: FB2, TXT, RTF, DOC, TCR, HTML, EPUB, CHM, PDB, MOBI (i.e. all the most common and in demand);
  • adjusting the brightness of the background and fonts (a mega handy thing, you can make reading convenient for any screen and person!);
  • auto-swiping (convenient, but not always: sometimes you read one page for 30 seconds, another for a minute);
  • convenient bookmarks (this is very convenient);
  • the ability to read books from archives (this is also very convenient, because many are distributed online in archives);

AL Reader

Another very interesting "reader". Among its main advantages: it is the ability to choose encodings (which means that when opening a book, “crack-zabras” and unreadable characters are practically excluded); support for both popular and rare formats: fb2, fb2.zip, fbz, txt, txt.zip, partial support for epub (without DRM), html, docx, odt, rtf, mobi, prc (PalmDoc), tcr.

In addition, it should be noted that this program can be used both when working with Windows and Android. I also want to note that this program has enough fine-tuning of brightness, fonts, indents, and other “things” that will help adjust the display to an ideal state, regardless of the equipment used. I recommend it for an unambiguous acquaintance!

FBReader

Another well-known and popular "reader", I could not ignore it within the framework of this article. Perhaps its most important advantages are: free, support for all popular and not so popular formats (ePub, fb2, mobi, html, etc.), flexible ability to customize the display of books (fonts, brightness, indents), a large network library (you can always pick up something for your evening reading).

By the way, one cannot but say that the application works on all the most popular platforms: Windows, Android, Linux, Mac OS X, Blackberry, etc.

Adobe Reader

This program is probably known to almost all users who have ever worked with the PDF format. And in this mega-popular format, many magazines, books, texts, pictures, etc. are distributed.

The PDF format is specific, sometimes it cannot be opened on other readers, except for Adobe Reader. Therefore, I recommend having a similar program on your PC. It has already become a basic program for many users and its installation does not even raise questions ...

DjVuViwer

The DJVU format has become very popular lately, partially replacing PDF format. This happens due to the fact that DJVU compresses the file more strongly, with the same quality. Books, magazines, etc. are also distributed in the DJVU format.

There are a lot of readers of this format, but among them there is one small and simple utility - DjVuViwer.

Why is it better than others:

  • light and fast;
  • allows you to scroll through all the pages at once (i.e. there is no need to turn them over, as in other programs of this kind);
  • there is a convenient option for creating bookmarks (precisely convenient, and not just its presence ...);
  • opening all DJVU files without exception (i.e. there is no such thing that the utility opened one file, and the second one could not ... And this, by the way, happens with some programs (like the universal programs presented above)).

For Android

eReader Prestigio

In my humble opinion, this is one of the best e-book readers for Android. I use it on my tablet all the time.

Judge for yourself:

  • a huge number of formats are supported: FB2, ePub, PDF, DJVU, MOBI, PDF, HTML, DOC, RTF, TXT (including audio formats: MP3, AAC, M4B and Read Books Out Loud (TTS));
  • completely in Russian;
  • convenient search, bookmarks, brightness adjustment, etc.

Those. a program from the category - installed 1 time and forgot about it, you just use it without thinking! I recommend trying it, a screenshot from it below.

FullReader+

Another handy android app. I also often use it, opening one book in the first reader (see above), and the second in this one :).

Main advantages:

  • support for a bunch of formats: fb2, epub, doc, rtf, txt, html, mobi, pdf, djvu, xps, cbz, docx, etc.;
  • the ability to read aloud;
  • convenient setting of the background color (for example, you can make the background like a real old book, some people like it);
  • built-in file manager (it’s convenient to immediately search for what you need);
  • a convenient "memory" of recently opened books (and reading the current one).

Book cataloging

For those who have a lot of books, it is quite difficult to do without some kind of cataloguer. Keeping in mind hundreds of authors, publishers, what has been read and what has not yet been read, to whom something has been given is a rather difficult task. And in this regard, I would like to highlight one utility - All My Books.

For those who consume the printed word exclusively on the scale of Twitter messages, a reasonable question arises: "Why are they needed on a computer at all, these same reader programs?"

Indeed, you can open small texts in any operating system without problems - there are enough standard applications for this. But there are simply no tools that allow you to work normally with more solid sizes in a "clean" system. And with staff, it is very inconvenient to do this, and the eyes get very tired.

So if you have to read rather large texts from the screen, and you want to do it with maximum comfort, and at the same time you still want to save your eyesight, you simply cannot do without specialized programs - electronic readers.

There are quite a few e-book readers out there. Each has its pros and cons. But it is impossible to cover them all in one article. Therefore, I will limit myself to only those that have "taken root" on my computers over the years. Or periodically, as needed, appear on them.

Easy and convenient program. And although it is not updated too often, all versions are still functional. Designed for Windows, but under Linux it usually works well under Wine. There is also an official one running Windows Mobile.

On mobile platforms, IMHO, she has no serious competitors at all, neither in terms of capabilities, nor in terms of convenience.

It has a large number of various settings, which you don’t have to look into if you don’t want to - most of the options are reasonably set and by default.

It has a large list of supported formats, including the now mega-popular FB2. One of the few that work with ODT files (Open Document used in OpenOffice.org, Microsoft Office and LibreOffice) without prior conversion.

The default interface resembles an open book, the yellowish background of the pages is more comfortable for the eyes and very comfortable for long reading. As a bonus - AlReader does not require installation and can work from any mobile media. For me personally, this is the most convenient and favorite program for reading FB2 and EPUB files.

The program is cross-platform and not only free (which is quite natural), but also open source - its sources are available. So on the Web you can find its version not only for any PC operating system, but I also met packages compiled by craftsmen for a variety of mobile platforms more than once. So, if you understand, you can conjure yourself with raw materials, or search the Web for a ready-made package specifically for your mobile device.

There is also a large selection of supported formats, a good set of settings, a choice between one-page and two-page reading modes, etc.

And although CoolReader 3 does not differ in anything extraordinary, it performs its main task "by 5 points" - reading with this program is very convenient (with the right settings "for yourself"). Over the years of use, no particular minuses have been noticed.

The word "Professional" in the title is not without reason - today, IMHO, this is the most powerful and versatile program for reading e-books. At the same time, the Russian version is free to use.

In fact, it consists of two equivalent modules - the reader itself (reader) and the library.

The reader can operate in two modes - scrolling mode (one page per screen) and book mode (two pages per screen). Moreover, each mode can be configured separately - background, font, page flipping, etc.

It is necessary to dwell a little more on scrolling. In ICE Book Reader Professional, you can turn pages both manually (and in several ways), and in automatic mode. In this case, you can either set the scrolling speed yourself or set it to full automatic. With full automatic, the program will independently adjust to the user's reading pace.

The library mode is a full-fledged cataloger in which you can sort the added books by genres, authors, series, etc. Moreover, the program can take the data for sorting itself, directly from the added files, or everything can be easily changed or set by hand.

It should be noted that the books are "imported" into the library - not just links to them are created, but the book file itself is copied to a special storage (you can adjust the compression level to save disk space). Therefore, after importing, there is no need for the original file.

When installing, I recommend that you carefully consider the option of choosing a directory for storing the library - a conveniently located directory with books (your personal settings are also stored in it - next time you won’t have to configure everything again) can be easily copied to simplify your task in case of possible reinstallations of the system or transferring the program to another PC.

The list of supported formats is more than impressive - almost all common formats. At the same time, ICE Book Reader can import books directly from archives, without any need to unpack them first. A wide variety of archives are also supported, including exotic and obsolete ones, with which no modern archiver works anymore.

The abundance of settings can confuse inexperienced users. And absolutely in vain - everything is very simple there. Just a little attention and time spent on setting up, and everything will pay off. Because ICE Book Reader is not only the most powerful reader today, but also the most customizable for a specific user. It can be perfectly adjusted just for you in order to read in comfort and enjoy the process.

Programs for viewing PDF, DjVu and other formats

In addition to all kinds of text formats, there are a number of others that, strictly speaking, are not text. But nevertheless, e-books in such formats are found on the Web all the time. At the same time, if in almost any Linux distribution right out of the box there are tools for viewing "everything and everything", then in a freshly installed Windows, tools for opening such files are completely absent as a class. You will have to install them yourself.

Of these formats, the first is PDF. It is in it that pirated copies of books are most often found on the Internet - scanned textbooks, encyclopedias, tutorials, magazines, etc. (however, not only pirated ones). Therefore, software for working with such files is "vital".

The original program from the developer of the format. And that says it all - everything that can only be supported and worked in PDF is supported and works. On the one hand, this is a plus. On the other hand, all kinds of scripts embedded in the book file itself also work. And among them now there can be malicious ones.

Having downloaded from the Internet a pirated version of some tutorial or a fresh version of a computer magazine in PDF, do not be too lazy to properly drive it with an antivirus.

As a result, Adobe is forced to constantly release patches and patch security holes. Vrochem, this problem concerns not only Adobe Reader, but also any other software for working with PDF. As for Adobe Reader itself, one of the shortcomings should be noted more than a significant amount occupied on the disk, and heaviness.

Also designed for viewing PDF, but an order of magnitude lighter than the above program. Lighter, faster and less gluttonous. At the same time, Foxit Reader is also not deprived of its capabilities. It has Russian localization (when the Internet is connected, select Russian in the settings - the localization file will automatically download and move to the right place). There are a bunch of versions - old, new, portable (works without installation)... - all doing their main function - PDF viewing, without any need for an adobe reader. So I recommend.

There is a version for Linux. And although it has been in beta for many years, it works without any serious glitches.

In addition to PDF, another common e-book format on the Internet is DjVu. It is ideal for scanning educational, scientific and engineering literature - one-color text containing drawings, formulas and graphs is compressed into relatively small files with very good quality. That's just from Windows programs for viewing this format, IMHO, only one is worthy of attention (Linux users have a little better with this question).

The program is small, fast and convenient. It does not differ in especially "fancy" functionality. But she is only required to tear off DjVu files normally, which she does "by five points". In general, highly recommended for use.

On my PCs, the "guest" is quite rare, but some will definitely come in handy. A distinctive feature of this program is its "omnivorousness". From e-books, it opens almost everything that can be opened. So if you don't want to run a whole "zoo" of reader programs on your computer, you can try STDU Viewer.

Well, for dessert, another program that stands somewhat apart.

This is just a reader - this is a real "combine" for working with electronic books. It consists of several modules, the first of which is the reader itself. Reads everything that can be read in principle. It has a lot of settings and all sorts of "goodies", dealing with which (due to the lack of Russian translation of the documentation) can bring a lot of pleasure. However, there is nothing particularly difficult there, and with due care, everything can be mastered by the "poke method", especially since the program interface itself is well localized (completely Russian).

Another part is the catalog library. It also has a lot of options for importing and sorting books, allowing you to sort your library as you like.

And, finally, one more module - the converter. The third and main module of the program. Since the main purpose of Caliber is to convert e-books into files for various mobile devices. At the same time, the program receives almost any file as input. e-book(the list of supported formats is huge - almost EVERYTHING), and at the output it produces a file suitable for reading on your mobile device. And here, too, all common combinations are possible.
