This material is currently used in a large number of different industries. Most often, it is praised for the fact that the weight of the product is very small and at the same time, it has excellent thermal insulation. In addition, it can be used as a filter or gasket material.
Felt according to GOST
Like many other industrial products, a standard has been set for the production of this material, which regulates the manufacturing process, technical requirements to the product, its properties, characteristics, marking, packaging, etc. It is worth noting that there are several GOSTs for technical felt. This is very important, since there are several varieties of felt, each of which has its own GOST and its own production process.
- There is a fine-wool felt - GOST 288-72.
- There is a technical semi-coarse wool felt - GOST 6308-71.
- There is also a fine-wool technical felt, which is used in electrical equipment - GOST 11025-78.
- Coarse wool felt - GOST - 6418-81.
- The last type of felt is yurt. His GOST - 16221-79.
Felt production
Felt is which can be made by felting from several of the following materials:
- production is possible from 100% animal wool;
- can be made from plant fibers;
- also for production can be used;
If we talk about the production of natural technical felt, then it can also be made from coarse wool, fine wool or semi-coarse wool fibers. The structure of this product is scaly. Due to the presence of such a nominal structure, in the process of felting this material, the scales interlock with each other, as a result of which a very dense monolithic fabric is formed. Most often, 100% sheep wool is used for the production of natural technical felt. However, in some cases, wool of rabbits or goats is also used. The product that is obtained by replacing the original wool is called fert and is characterized by the fact that it is softer.
The use of felt in transport
One of the many applications of this product is the insulation of a vehicle or its complete thermal insulation. In addition to this characteristic, it is also able to create sound insulation in the car and reduce any vibration. Since most often this material is made from natural sheep wool, then when high temperatures it will not emit any harmful fumes into the atmosphere. The maximum temperature that technical felt can withstand is about 200 degrees Celsius. In addition to all these parameters, felt is also able to protect the vehicle from moisture.
Use of felt in a residential area
This one is perfect for use in residential buildings. There are several reasons for this. The first reason for the widespread use of this product is that it is considered completely environmentally friendly and harmless to human health. The second reason is to provide excellent protection of the room from drafts, as well as cold. It can be used as an insulating material, laying it in the gaps between windows or doors. The third reason for the widespread use of technical felt, therefore, is that this material perfectly isolates the interior from external odors. Also, the use of this material will provide decent protection against mold and dampness in the room.
However, these applications are only a small part of the vast number in which it is also used. It is used quite a lot in the construction industry, in the production of furniture, as well as in the creation musical instruments. Such a large number of areas of application of the same material is explained by the fact that in the process of creation it is possible to give it various characteristics that are required in a particular industry.
Application of felt by type
Coarse wool felt is used in places where the load and also the speeds are not too high. This type of felt is used in places where technical requirements are not too high. It has also found a place in foundation construction as bitumen-impregnated pads.
There is a type of fine-wool felt used in prostheses. In prostheses such as TU 803-54 given material serves as a lining and also as part of the dentures themselves. Most often, hands and finger parts of the foot are produced from it. The thickness of technical felt is 20 mm, 40 or 50. The composition of this material itself is 85% and the remaining 15 are combed noils.
Semi-coarse wool material is used in more stressed areas, and is also often used as a raw material for the production of small in size, but very strong parts.
Fine-wool felt has found its application in instrument making, in the most critical places. According to your technical specifications this species material can be used for the production of parts such as oil seals, gaskets, filters, wicks.

Notes:
1. Negative tolerances should not exceed 0.02 g/cm.
2. The maximum density should not exceed that specified in Table 7 for this type of felt.
3. Density standards are set for rings having a width of at least 7 mm. For rings having a width of less than 7 mm, they are installed in agreement with the consumer.
2.7. In terms of mechanical strength, felt for insulation must meet the following requirement: when hanging by one edge without distortion of a felt cavity 4 m long, there should be no rupture of the cavity due to its own mass.
2.8. Felt rings with an outer diameter of up to 60 mm inclusive are made in one piece, over 60 mm - sewn from tape, except for those rings that cannot be sewn due to the large difference between the width and thickness of the ring. Such rings are made in one piece.
At the request of the consumer, it is allowed to produce whole-cut rings with an outer diameter of more than 60 mm.
2.9. Felt rings sewn from tape must meet the following requirements:
with an outer diameter of the ring up to 400 mm inclusive, one seam is allowed, more than 400 mm - two seams;
the junction line at the stitching point should be inclined, and the cut angle () should be 20-30 ° (see drawing);
stitching is carried out in at least two rows of linen threads 105 tex x5, 130 tex x4, 105 tex x6, 130 tex x5 according to GOST 14961 or extra strong cotton threads 27 tex x3x3, 27 tex x3x4, 18.5 tex x3x3, 16.5 tex x3x2 according to GOST 6309.
The thickness of the threads is chosen depending on the width and thickness of the ring.
With a ring width of 10 mm or more, the line closest to the inner edge of the ring must be at least 3 mm away from it. With a ring width of less than 10 mm, it is allowed to sew the rings in one row with the stitching at an equal distance from the edges of the ring;
when stitching rings from tapes up to 10 mm thick, the stitching step should be no more than 6 mm, with a tape thickness of more than 10 mm - no more than 10 mm;
the cut planes of the joint must fit snugly against each other and must not be displaced;
at the junction, the thickness of the ring should not exceed the norms and maximum deviations indicated in Table 5;
at the junction, the elasticity of the ring should not differ markedly from the elasticity of the ring in other areas;
the bulk of the fibers in the crosslinked ring should be directed along the circumference of the ring.
(Changed edition, Rev. N 2).
2.10. Felt and details from it should not delaminate.
2.11. Gluing felt and details from it is not allowed.
2.12. The surface of the parts must be clean, with evenly removed pile, without scars. The presence of pile is allowed in the details-layings.
2.13. Details should not have tears, torn places, bevels and other mechanical damage.
2.14. The edges of the felt cavity should not have more than ±20 mm deviations from straightness per 1 m of length.
3. ACCEPTANCE RULES AND TEST METHODS
3.1. Acceptance rules and test methods - according to GOST 314.
4. PACKAGING, LABELING, TRANSPORT AND STORAGE
4.1. The felt cavities are tightly rolled up into a roll weighing no more than 70 kg and tied in two places with a rope according to GOST 1868.
At the request of the consumer and when transported by rail, tied rolls of felt must be packed in an investment fabric made of chemical threads or an investment non-woven fabric in accordance with GOST 14253 and other regulatory and technical documentation.
4.2. At the end of each cavity of the felt, a stamp indicating the designation of the felt must be affixed.
4.3. Felt parts are packed in boxes in accordance with GOST 10350, bales or bags made of packing fabric in accordance with GOST 5530 * or packing fabric made of chemical threads according to regulatory and technical documentation. Bales or bags are sewn up manually with twine according to GOST 17308. The stitch length should not exceed (40±10) mm.
