Alcatel mobile router. Test review of Alcatel HH40V Wi-Fi router with Ethernet and LTE support. Settings\Wireless & networks\Wi-Fi settings\

Wi-Fi routers in modern world have become as common devices as televisions or computers. They are massively installed in offices, apartment buildings and country houses. True, not all of them have support for LTE networks and a failover function in case of loss of signal from the underlying Internet source. The signal source here can be not only a wired connection, but also 2G / 3G and 4G mobile networks.

A month ago, TCL Communication, which produces mobile equipment and network equipment under Alcatel brand, announced a new WiFi router for high-speed Internet connection - Alcatel HH40V Internet Center. The device became the first device of this brand that combines the functions of a classic router powered by a wired Internet source and a wireless LTE modem that can be connected to any network. mobile operator, including using 2G/3G.

The Qualcomm MDM9207 chip is responsible for the communication part of the router. It supports all mobile network standards up to 4G with download speeds up to 150 Mbps. In addition, the device can also be used via a wired Ethernet connection. The gadget can distribute Wi-Fi immediately for 32 users at speeds up to 300 Mbps.

In addition to the router itself, the set includes an adapter for power supply with a USB output with a voltage of 5V and a current of 2A, a USB-microUSB cable (through which the device is powered), an RJ45 LAN cable (for connecting to local network or computer connections), 2 external LTE antennas with SMA connector, quick start guide, warranty card.

As you can see, the set is complete. Additional accessories are not required.

Appearance

id="sub2">

The appearance of the router is calm and minimalistic. On sale you can find two colors of design - black and white. We had a black version on the test. The case itself is made of hard plastic. On the upper part, a glossy coating is used, on which dust immediately appears during operation.

There are numerous holes for ventilation at the bottom. You can also see the mounts for mounting the router on the wall.

On the front of the device is a round on/off button. On the left side there is a slot for a micro SIM card. On the right side there is a WPS mode key and a hole for resetting all settings, marked as "RESET".

On the back of the Alcatel HH40V, you can see two RJ45 LAN ports for connecting computers and a network, two SMA connectors for connecting external LTE antennas, and a microUSB output for a power cable. All interfaces are marked. There are no difficulties when connecting wires or external devices. Everything is intuitive.

Connection and setup

id="sub3">

The Alcatel HH40V Internet Center is a 2.4GHz 2x2 MIMO Wi-Fi 802.11n hotspot. The Qualcomm MDM9207 1.2 GHz and QCA9531 550 MHz chips are responsible for the performance of the equipment. It is worth noting the presence of 256 MB of permanent and 128 MB random access memory.

It can serve up to 32 users at the same time. The router works both from a wired connection and from mobile network GSM/UMTS/LTE standards. Connection and setup are distinguished by their intuitiveness and speed.

To stay constantly connected to the Internet, Alcatel HH40V can choose between a primary and a backup connection. For example, if the cable connection is lost, then the 4G connection is activated automatically. The device uses two external 2dBi antennas to amplify the LTE signal.

For the router to work, it is enough to connect it to the power supply, install a SIM card of any operator in a special slot. You can also connect the device to an Ethernet network.

After turning on for 2-3 minutes, the router determines the type of network source and starts distributing WiFi Internet. It happens in automatic mode. The progress of the connection can be monitored using the indicators on the front of the case. To manage the router, you can use a special mobile app Alcatel LINK APP. You can also configure the equipment using the web interface http://192.168.1.1 in the browser.

WLAN access data (network code, keys, default administrator password) are located on a sticker on the bottom of the router.

It is worth noting that when using LTE Cat.4 as an Internet source maximum speed is up to 150 Mbps when receiving data and up to 50 Mbps when sending data. In a 3G mobile network, up to 42 Mbps - when receiving data and up to 11.5 Mbps - when sending data. In the case of using Ethernet, the speed will be up to 100 Mbps. When using Wi-Fi 802.11n 2.4 GHz 2x2 MIMO - up to 300 Mbps.

In test conditions, the device regularly distributes the Internet. As a signal source, we used MegaFon's LTE network. Preliminarily, speed measurements were taken from a smartphone. As a result, the router distributed approximately the same speed to devices connected via Wi-Fi, including a computer connected via twisted pair.

Functions

id="sub4">

Alcatel HH40V internet center manufacturer promises 24/7 Internet access reservation and control. Through the settings through the web interface or the mobile application for Android and iOS called Alcatel LINK APP, you can optimize the operation of the device according to your own needs and goals.

IPoE, PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP, static IP address are provided. It is possible to clone the MAC address. There is support for IPv4, IPv6 and dual stack, TCP / IP, UDP, DHCP protocols. Also worth noting are dynamic DNS (DDNS) settings, MAC/URL/IP filtering, built-in SPI firewall, NAT support, DMZ, port forwarding, UPnP, IPTV support: IGMPv1, IGMPv2, IGMP snooping, TVport. The router provides VPN connection transit, works in Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM), DLNA.

Among other things, Alcatel HH40V has support for SMS, USSD. The firmware is updated automatically over the network (FOTA).

The device can really be extremely useful for use in small offices and homes where there is no stable wired connection, or in cases of unstable operation of the main channel. You can connect to the router not only computers, smartphones, tablets, but also other portable equipment: printers, MFPs, game consoles, monitors, TVs, etc.

Another question is that the average data transfer rates are 100 Mbps at best, and this is with a wired connection. In the case of using a mobile network, the speed is approximately 20-30 Mbps in 4G and about 6-7 Mbps in 3G. For an undemanding person, this is quite enough. However, for professional users this may not be enough. This fact should be taken into account if you have a stable connection channel. In the case of a mobile network, improving speeds simply will not work.

On the day the review was published, the Alcatel HH40V internet center could be bought in stores at a price of 4,790 rubles.

Rate.

The full name is Alcatel One Touch Link Y 900 by TCT Mobile (Alcatel) and will be sold under the Beeline brand. The most interesting is support for LTE Advanced and a 3600 mAh battery. And the dimensions are smaller than those of a router with a battery of half the capacity.

Dots over "i"

Alcatel One Touch Link Y 900 will be sold exclusively in retail network Beeline, in Moscow starting from August 03 at a price of 5,990 rubles. Includes 2 weeks mobile internet"Beeline" (option "Internet package 30 GB") for free. After this period, you can change the Internet package depending on the required amount of traffic, or continue using it, but with the option “Internet package 20 GB. The router is locked to work in the Beeline network.

There is only one SIM card, microSIM format. Impressive technical characteristics with such dimensions, quite modern stuffing. Qualcomm MDM9230 processor, support for all LTE, UMTS and GSM bands (FDD-LTE: 800/900/1800/2100/2600 MHz, UMTS: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz, GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz), except perhaps TDD-LTE support. Which is still not used in the Beeline network.

Availability of LTE Advanced Cat. 6 (aggregation of two frequency bands for data reception) allows us to hope that the router will be able to extract from the 4G + network the maximum that the network wants and can give in a particular place. The next step is Cat. 9, but this is not soon in devices of this class. Yes, and such networks are just beginning to run in separate fragments.

As you understand, miracles do not happen, and it was not easy to fit into such dimensions. They sacrificed the screen, the multifunctional control button seemed to me too narrow and uncomfortable. Antennas are only built-in (MIMO), there are no sockets for using external antennas. But the battery is as much as 3600 mAh and removable, the power bank function is also provided.

Support for Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, the router does not work simultaneously in two bands. The Wi-Fi signal strength is adjustable (three steps), at maximum power, the coverage area is not much worse than that of a stationary router. Supports simultaneous connection of up to 32 (!) users, the default setting is 10 connections. The repeater mode, unfortunately, is not provided.

There are no complaints about the radio unit, although the sensitivity in 4G behaves unusually, so to speak. But everything is within the normal range, and the router holds on to the 4G network securely. Switching 4G / 3G / 2G and vice versa works out well, although the transition from 3G to 4G occurs with some braking.

Equipment and design

Neutral white box, complete with documentation, 2A charger and a short, coarse connecting cable almost as thick as a little finger.

The design is pleasant, but the router looks a little plump. This is a feature of the design solution, the model is offered in two versions: with a 1800 or 3600 mAh battery. In the variant with a 1800 mAh battery, it turned out to be a compact, harmonious in all dimensions and stylish box. For the version with a 3,600 mAh battery (the version sold in Russia), they simply made a deep “trough-back”, without changing anything else. This causes a feeling of some asymmetry in the result.

I recalled Chinese "custom" batteries with increased capacity for smartphones, they were equipped with a deeper back cover, and a large battery also stuck out of the main body. Well, okay, battery capacity is much more important than the aesthetic pleasure of ideal proportions.

Highlighted large rectangles show signal strength cellular network, indicators 2G, 3G and 4G are displayed on the side face. The battery level can only be judged by changing the color of the LED indicator on the front panel (turns to red when the charge level is less than 20%), on the web management page, or in a dedicated smartphone application. Not very convenient, but tolerable. Moreover, the battery is still enough for a full day of operation with a margin.

Design

Dual Micro USB 3.0 High Speed, the same used in external drives.

It is wiser to use the bundled cable, but the usual Micro USB router charges normally, although it takes much longer. The downside is that the usual connector in the double socket is almost not fixed, and you need to put the router for charging where you will not accidentally touch it.

A narrow "rocker" of turning on, WPS, and it is the same - waking up the router from standby mode. The button is not very comfortable, and the operation of pressing is almost not felt, but you can get used to it.

Nothing of particular interest inside. Sockets for MicroSIM and a memory card of a very ancient sample, with a sliding shutter-latch. I do not think that they saved a penny, rather, they fought for millimeters of space.

Here, compare the dimensions with a MegaFon MR300-1 router of approximately the same class and a 3,000 mAh battery, the body thickness of both devices is the same.

Control

It is impossible to “manage” the router directly from the case, only turn it on and off. You can change modes and configure from a computer in the standard way through the home page 192.168.1.1. The settings menu is discussed in detail in the review of the Beeline ZTE MF90 router. Over the past time, some improvements and improvements have appeared, but they were described in the analysis of the previous version of the Alcatel router, and there is no point in repeating the third time.

As with the previous Alcatel Y850 router from Beeline, the same effect of the inoperability of the settings page in the Firefox browser, now version 39.0: the password is entered every other time, the interface loads for a long time and crashes, menu navigation does not always work. It's good that I immediately remembered this phenomenon and quickly climbed into Internet Explorer, in which everything worked perfectly. It also works in stock Android browser.

It is possible to either select the "Auto" mode, or fix the device to work in one specific standard. As already written, there WiFi support IEEE 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, but the router does not work simultaneously in two bands. On the management page, I could not find a section with statistics of consumed traffic, perhaps I did not search well enough.

There is a fully functional app on Google Play. Moreover, now there are two of them with the same name “WiFi Smart Link”. If you believe the descriptions, one of them is universal, and the second is strictly for the Y858 model. As expected, the universal application did not see our Y900, but a separate version for Y858 worked fine with the device. A localized Russian-language version was promised by the end of July. In the application, you can watch traffic and set a monthly rate with a notification, but, for example, it is impossible to switch Wi-Fi ranges or network standards. There is no perfection in the world, alas.

In order not to read the descriptions on English language, you can focus on the color of the icon in Google Play, the desired version of the application is slightly darker.

At the first wired connection to the computer, the router did not want to "pretend" to be an Ethernet connection (RNDIS), so I had to run the setup program from the router's memory. After that everything worked well. The connecting cable, of course, is depressing with its rigidity and a length of less than 60 cm.

Impressions from work

The question of sensitivity was a little intriguing. On the one hand, "iron" capture, retention of the 4G network and decent signal strength indicators from one operator. In the place where not every device finds this network at all. On the other hand, the indication of a clearly weak signal from another operator in a place where all other 4G devices have no problems, “a lot of sticks” and everything works fine. There is a suspicion that different indications are somehow connected with LTE Advanced, for which the router clings to one network, but does not find it in another.

There are no complaints about the speed characteristics. I tried with two other LTE-A routers, the results are comparable. I won't say that the Alcatel Y900 is noticeably better, but I didn't see any obvious failures either. Which, taking into account the size of the device, can be considered a very good result of speed measurements.

The “sore point” of such devices is switching between networks of different standards, there are freezes during movement. On the Alcatel Y900, I did not see any obvious problems, including during trips to the subway. Normally "flips" between 2G-3G-4G and vice versa. But there is some “thoughtfulness” (a few seconds) when switching “up”. Not a defect, but I would say this: for use in a driving car, this is not the best option.

The device is clearly not all perfect either with a temperature sensor or with ventilation. A couple of times in the heat in the pocket of my bag, the router turned off for no apparent reason. At the same time, to the touch, I would not call it downright “hot”. Yes, it was hot, but others continued to work even at higher (again, to the touch) case temperatures. Too much margin protection? May be. Nothing criminal, especially for Russian climatic conditions, but I advise you to take note.

The Wi-Fi module is very good. In the maximum power mode, the coverage is comparable to the coverage of routers with external antennas, in the medium mode (default setting) it corresponds to the performance of most pocket routers. Low Power Mode - Approximately an Android smartphone in hotspot mode. The default average power is optimal for most scenarios, but it's good that the adjustment is provided.

One of the smartphones saw wifi network 2.4 GHz in the truest sense of the word, two times for the third. I switched the router from "Auto" mode to manual channel selection, and everything worked flawlessly. Perhaps a specific smartphone is to blame.

Summary

modern machine with good performance. LTE Advanced cat. 6, 3600 mAh battery, Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Up to 32 simultaneous connections. There is no display, and the control is not as convenient as we would like. But the price does not scare, the equivalent of $ 100 for this entire "grocery set" in a compact package.
