Five basic rules for decorating walls with plates

The following tips will help you create an original composition with your own hands from any plates (gift, decorative, etc.), which will become a “highlight” in your interior.

Match the plates with the style of the room. For a classic style, porcelain with floral patterns in white and blue colors or gilded are suitable. For modern style use bright and colorful patterns. And in country style, white or cream ceramic dishes will look perfect.

When choosing the color scheme of the wall composition, make sure that it is combined with other details in the interior, for example, with the color of floor tiles, furniture or textiles. On a plain background, you can hang plates with any patterns.

Apply the principle of contrast when forming a wall composition. Light decorative saucers will go well with dark walls, and vice versa.

When composing a composition from plates, follow the main rule: they must be combined with each other in at least one way, for example: in shape, color, pattern or theme.

Combine a collage of dishes with other decorative elements, for example, they will look very nice next to vases or wall sconces (see photo).

Advice! Don't be afraid to experiment with the size and color of the decorative plates: combine solid colors with multi-colored ones, and large ones with small and medium ones.

The most popular options for placing plates on the wall

With the help of gift or decorative plates, you can decorate rooms of various purposes, decorated in absolutely any style. It is believed that the optimal places for their placement are as follows:

  • above the head of the bed in the bedroom;

  • above a chest of drawers in the hallway or living room;

  • on the shelves of a sideboard or a special rack in the kitchen (see photo);

  • above the console in the hallway;
  • on empty walls.

So that the composition does not clutter up the room and looks advantageous in the interior, it is better to place the plates in accordance with the ready-made schemes developed by the designers. Consider the 9 most popular ways to place them in the interior.

Saucers arranged in one (or more) rows on a special rack, in a niche or on the buffet shelves look spectacular.

A composition of symmetrically arranged plates will always look advantageous and beautiful. It is desirable that the rest of the decor is also symmetrical.

You can decorate the entire empty wall by evenly distributing saucers over it.

From the plates on the wall, you can make some kind of geometric or arbitrary figure, as in the photo.

An ideal option for decorating walls is a wall panel made of plates (see photo). At the same time, they should be close to each other so that the overall pattern is clearly visible.

You can use a special display to place dishes. In this case, it should be in the same color scheme.

When decorating the wall, plates and paintings can be evenly matched, as in the photo

If the wall is wide, then the plates can be arranged in a wave shape, which will look very interesting and stylish. However, they can be of different unusual sizes and shapes.

If the wall is narrow, then plates arranged vertically will look beautiful: from large to small, or vice versa.

Methods for attaching plates to the wall with your own

So, you have chosen the location of the plates and come up with a composition, now it remains only to securely fix them on the wall. How to do it easily and accurately? Ready-made mounts can be bought on the Internet or construction hypermarkets. For instance, the only way hanging plates on the wall without using nails is the use of Command Velcro. They perfectly hold the dishes on the wall, they are easy to stick and peel off.

You can also purchase adhesive discs in different sizes with hinges or forged wall decorative holders. If you do not have the opportunity to buy mounts, then it is easy to make them yourself. But in this case, nails can no longer be dispensed with. Loops are made from improvised materials, with the help of which the plates are fixed on nails hammered into the wall. The main materials from which the hinges are made:

  • wire;
  • pin;
  • clip;
  • satin ribbon;
  • tin can ring, etc.

To the back of the plate, you can fix any of the above loops with Poxipol glue. To keep it better on the plate and look beautiful, you can glue a piece of rice paper on top and coat it with clear varnish. Such fasteners will be not only reliable, but also neat. If rice paper is not available, you can use tape.

Advice! To obtain a secure fastening, before applying the adhesive to the plate, it is necessary to degrease the surface and scratch it a little.

If you do not want to make your own mounts, you can purchase special decorative or gift plates in stores with ready-made mounts that can be easily hung on the wall. They can even be washed in the dishwasher without fear that the fasteners will peel off.

After the repair and arrangement of furniture is completed, there is always a need to add accessories to the wall in the interior. Most often, you want to close the void on the wall in the kitchen or living room. One way is to decorate in the form of decorative plates. They are able to add zest to any environment. Video: How to creatively decorate walls with decorative plates

Creating decor for your own apartment or original gift occupation is interesting and exciting. One of the types applied art is the decor of plates, usually they decorate the kitchen interior. So if you decide to add zest to your own kitchen or make a beautiful and cozy gift, then decorative plates made from scrap materials with your own hands will come in handy.

A plate made in the same color scheme or combined with the interior will help save money on buying expensive decor and make your home really original, cozy and beautiful. Where to start?

We make decorative plates with our own hands: decoration techniques

Decorative plates are created using a wide variety of techniques and using various materials. This can be decoration using decoupage and quilling techniques, decoration with ribbons, different types of painting - stained glass, dotted, marble and others. As a basis, you can take as usual ceramic plate or a plate of clay, and cut a circle of plywood of suitable diameter and work on it.

Decorating a plate using decoupage technique.

To work, you will need a round base, a basin of water, glue, a brush, scissors and acrylic varnish, as well as a suitable image - a postcard or a printed drawing.

We apply 5-7 layers of acrylic varnish on the image, allowing each previous layer to dry properly. When all the varnish has dried, place the image in a bowl of water for 10-15 minutes, then remove and separate the paper from the varnish layer. We cut out the desired fragment of the picture, place it on a plate and fix it on it also with the help of varnish. You can fix the plate on the wall with a rope or a lid with a ring from a can, fixed with strong adhesive, and also install it on the table using a special stand. It turned out to be a beautiful decoration with a minimum of costs.

Painting on a decorative plate.

If you know how or just like to draw, then you should definitely try to paint a plate. There are several ways to do this: stencil painting, dot painting, stained glass, artistic painting and others. Each artist will be able to choose for himself a method to his taste and strength.

Acrylic paints are used for drawing, self-drying and requiring baking, special markers for glass and ceramics. If you have enough experience in drawing or your soul requires improvisation, you can create a pattern on the go or use the art painting technique when the plate becomes a canvas and whole pictures are created on it. It will be easy for a novice artist to work with stencils or using the technique spot painting.

Dot painting.

Dot painting is a technique of drawing and creating contours by applying dots, due to which a spectacular three-dimensional image is created. Plates decorated in this way look like they are embroidered with beads or beads. You will need acrylic paints for work, you can draw with them directly from the tube or, if this method seems difficult, use a small brush or toothpick. Pre-practice putting points of different sizes and maintaining the same distance between them.

Before work, degrease the surface. For a beginner the best option will use a glass transparent plate, with reverse side which you can glue the pattern template. You can also transfer the pattern to a plate using tracing paper. We start by drawing large general contours, then move on to small details.

We leave the plate to dry properly during the day, you can speed up this process with a hair dryer or by baking the plate in the oven for half an hour at a temperature of about 160 degrees. After complete drying, fix the pattern with varnish.

Decorative plate in mixed media.

When creating a decorative plate, the final result depends only on the master, who can use not only various techniques, but also their combinations. For example, to create a plate as in the photo below, we will use the decoupage technique along with dot painting.

So, we prepare the base, degrease it. Next, we work in the decoupage technique. We choose a suitable image, process it with varnish and let it dry. We soak in water, separate the pattern, cut it out and fix it on a plate, not forgetting to leave a free edge for painting. After the varnish has dried, we paint the edge of the plate, and also add volume to the drawing using the dot painting technique and cover with a finishing layer of varnish. Do not forget how to dry all layers of work. The result is a wonderful decorative plate in the Provence style, which will easily decorate a suitable interior or become a very original gift.

Of course, there are many techniques for decorating plates, for example, more complex stained glass painting or marble technique. However, you should not immediately strive for complex work, as we see even the simplest techniques end up with amazing results if you make a little effort and add inspiration. Do not be afraid to try, make mistakes, look for suitable ways and creating decorative plates will give you a lot of pleasant emotions.

Video selection on the topic of the article

Finally, a small selection of master classes on the decor of plates quickly and easily with your own hands:

Oksana's ideas and works have been met with us more than once (for example, in the articles “ City of washcloths" or " Beautiful postcard in 5 minutes"). And finally today - first hand information. By the way, the data is very relevant, because soon (gift absorber 🙂). Therefore let's start.

A long time ago, along with the creation of ceramic dishes, a craving for beauty manifested itself - plates, bowls, jugs were decorated with images of animals, people, birds, flowers, intricate ornaments ...

Since then and until recently, painting ceramics has been the domain of professionals. Why, ? Cups-plates-jugs were decorated with glaze; fixation - high-temperature firing in muffle furnaces. If the purpose of the dishes is not only to look, but also to use, the requirements for glaze and firing are even higher ...

Today is easier. In needlework stores there is a large selection of paints for painting, including ceramics. And you yourself can paint a decorative plate with your own hands - easy, simple, affordable. But you need to take into account a few important points that we asked the professional.

The first question, without the solution of which there will be no case at all:

- I would advise you to address this question to a consultant in any store for goods for hobbies and creativity. They will not only willingly tell you, but also show you paint samples, so it is easier to choose. You can find:

  • and transparent paints that resemble watercolor in effect,
  • and covering with a beautiful glossy effect.

In addition, there are two color options:

  1. Which do not require firing; good for decorative plates, but may not be suitable for dishes that come into contact with food.
  2. Which can be fixed at home in a conventional oven (for example, for 30 minutes at 150 degrees).

And if the instructions say that the paints are suitable for food utensils, can

  • and eat from such plates and cups
  • and wash them in the dishwasher.

The main thing is not to confuse 🙂

What else should be considered when choosing paints for painting ceramics?

- For ceramics, there are water-soluble paints. They can be diluted with water. After drying - a very durable layer, resistant to washing. And there are paints with solvents - be sure to ask the seller. You also need brushes, of course. Better than several sizes and shapes.

Well, no ceramics. Smooth, glossy white ("porcelain") plates, cups, bowls, and any other store-bought items will do. White - so it is more convenient to combine colors. Smooth - so as not to waste a lot of paint on filling pores. Glass is also suitable for drawing, so you can create stained-glass windows.

- So, there is a plate, paints, brushes ... And then? Procedure for painting plates?

- Choose a ready-made drawing from a book, the Internet, or make a couple of sketches on paper. The shape of the plate prompts you to choose a plot that fits into a circle. Here are a couple of examples of my "round pattern" decorative plates:

At first, you can transfer the drawing using a carbon paper. It is convenient to draw on your own with a light felt-tip pen: it is easy to erase and edit. IMPORTANT: permanent markers are not erased, be careful. If the paints on ceramics are transparent, then at the beginning, lightly wipe the plate - the outline of the pattern will become barely visible and disappear at the end.

There are special contours for painting ceramics - paint in tubes with a thin nose. The contours in the painting are usually white or black (but there are other colors). Purpose: the contour does not allow the paint to spread. Just circle the drawing with it, wait for it to dry and paint. And with the help of such a contour, you can imitate a stained glass window if you draw on glass.

- HM interesting! Are there any secrets, chips in the painting of plates?

- Of course have! The more you draw and use different materials, the more chips you will know! For instance:

  1. Matte or transparent paint - the painting will look different.
  2. Transparent paints can flow beautifully one into another, like watercolor. But try not to do more than one or two layers (otherwise the result is dirt).
  3. Also important: any paint contains a solvent, and if the bottom layer is not dry enough, the top one can blur it.

  1. Paint from the center to the edges, so as not to accidentally touch the drawing that has not yet dried with your hand.
  2. After drying, you can apply dots with a white outline - the plate will become more decorative. I call it "the magic of the white dots".

Here is an example of transforming a picture using white dots. Original drawing:

White dots come into play:

If you are using food grade paints, follow the instructions to ensure the design is well sealed.

Do you often hold master classes in plate painting? Many wishing?

– I don’t have a regular plan for master classes, I do it on request or by inspiration – we not only paint the plates, but also

  • write pictures,
  • we sew toys from socks,
  • we roll from felt,
  • do decoupage

Happy plate decorating!

Write reviews, comments and questions, if anything - we will extract details and details.

Do-it-yourself plate painting is an art that is available for both experienced and novice decorators. After all, the technique is very easy to master, does not require the purchase of expensive materials, waste of time and effort, so you can not be afraid to lose interest in the process. And hand painting on glass and ceramics can become your permanent hobby, relaxation method or even a hand-made business on Internet sites like the Crafts Fair or Etsy.

In this material, we will consider the following methods and techniques for painting plates with our own hands, which are suitable for beginners:

  1. Painting on stencils and patterns;
  2. Artistic hand-painted plates;
  3. Stained glass painting.

Master class No. 1: chiseled painting of plates

Dot painting of plates (piqué or point to point) is a technique of drawing and creating contours with dots, thanks to which you can achieve the effect of embossing, inlay with stones, colored rhinestones or beadwork. In the photo below, you can take note of the successful combinations of colors and patterns (scroll the photo to the right).

And here are the ideas for decorating bowls using the pique technique.

For work you will need:

  1. Cotton pads for degreasing and cotton buds for correcting an unsuccessful pattern;
  2. Ethyl alcohol, nail polish remover or a special degreaser;
  3. Contour acrylic paints of the desired colors;
  4. Aerosol varnish to fix and protect the pattern;
  5. Needle and paper for cleaning tubes.

Advice:

  • If you want to use the plates for their intended purpose, then choose baked acrylics labeled dishwasher ability or dishwasher resistant. Durable contour paints can be found in the Hobby Line brands Kreul, Decola, Marabu and Pebeo Vitrail.
  • Paints should not be too thick or too thin. You can check this in the following way: press the tube - if the paint comes out easily, but in a puddle, then the consistency is too liquid, if it is difficult to squeeze out, then it is too thick. Before starting work, you need to test each tube, since different colors of paint of the same type can have different consistency.
  • You can draw dots with a small, thin brush, needle, or toothpick, using acrylic pottery paints in regular jars, if you find tube painting difficult.

Drawing technique

First of all, you need to degrease the surface well with alcohol or a degreaser using a cotton pad, and only then proceed to creativity. Experienced craftsmen can draw immediately on a plate, without using any sketches or markings, inventing patterns right in the process. You, too, can trust the free flight of thoughts and improvise. But if you want to realize a certain artistic idea, then it is better to first draw a sketch, template, stencil or markup, having thought through the color scheme and ornaments.

For painting on glass, it is convenient to use templates that can be glued on the back of the plate.

Tip for beginners: Before you paint your plate, practice putting small, medium and large dots on paper at the same distance from each other with the same pressure and pressure on the tube.

  • The main rules: there must be points of the same size in one line, and the same distance must be maintained between the points, and it is very important that it (the distance) be minimal, that is, such that the points are “read”, but do not merge into a solid contour ;
  • Remember that the larger the points, the greater the distance between them can be. Conversely, the smaller the points, the smaller the distance from each other should be;
  • You need to draw according to the principle from the general to the particular, that is, starting with large contours and ending with the drawing of small details.

After work, the paint should dry. You can dry them in three ways:

  1. In a natural way for 1 day - if you want to use the plate rarely or even use it only as a decor item.
  2. Dry with a hair dryer, and then leave the paint to harden naturally for 10-12 hours.
  3. Bake at a temperature of 150-170 degrees for half an hour, and then, without removing it from the oven, let the dishes cool down - in case you want to eat from painted plates. It is advisable not to wash the painted dishes for 20 days after firing - this way the paint will last longer.

After the paint on the decorative plate has dried, you can fix it with varnish.

Master class number 2: painting plates on stencils and patterns

Another way that anyone can master is painting dishes using stencils and patterns.

For work you will need:

  1. Acrylic paints for glass and ceramics or felt-tip pens for painting dishes, which come in different colors and thicknesses of the rod. In Russia, you can most often find markers from Marabu;
  2. Artistic synthetic brushes of suitable sizes (if necessary) or sponge for tamping;
  3. Nail polish remover, alcohol or degreaser and cotton pads for degreasing;
  4. Everything you need to draw and cut a stencil or template: paper, cutter, pencil.

Drawing technique

First you need to draw yourself or print a ready-made stencil / template, and then cut out the necessary holes with a clerical knife. Perhaps, in this technique, only this stage can be called laborious. Then everything is much simpler: degrease the surface and glue the template to the bottom with adhesive tape.

Then we paint over / stamp the drawing on the stencil. After that, you can place accents on your picture, draw details or contours.

If you painted with acrylics, then you can dry them naturally, with a hair dryer or in the oven, according to the recommendations of the first master class on spot painting plates.

Master class number 3: Art painting by hand with brushes

Plate painting traditional way, that is, with brushes and paints - this The best way write a real masterpiece.

For work you will need:

  1. Artistic synthetic brushes of different shapes and sizes;
  2. Acrylic paints for glass and ceramics or water-based stained glass paints;
  • Tip: stained glass paints are more transparent and at the same time brighter, but they are a little more difficult to work with due to their liquid consistency and the ability to spread over the surface, so they are often used in combination with contour paints that hold them back. Also, keep in mind that solvent-based stained glass paints are not suitable for painting plates that will be used for their intended purpose.
  1. Any degreaser.

Drawing technique

First you need to write an underpainting, that is, draw large parts of the composition, which will be its basis. Next, add volume and depth to the drawing, using dark and light tones. And then start drawing the details. At the end of the work, use the recommendations for fixing the paint from the first master class.

Advice:

  • Mix paints and play with halftones to get unusual colors and effects.
  • Painting a ceramic plate with a matte glaze will be easier than painting on glossy ceramics or glass, as the paint will lay down more densely and evenly.

Here are simple but interesting ideas for painting plates with brushes and acrylics with your own hands for beginner artists (scroll the photo to the right).

For those who have the skill and experience of drawing, we offer you to be inspired by the following selection of photos of painted plates.

And here is a great idea for painting saucers and plates from old tea sets.

Master class number 4: painting with markers on ceramics and glass

Drawing with markers and felt-tip pens is familiar to all of us from childhood. With the help of special felt-tip pens for painting dishes with your own hands, you can quickly and easily decorate a ceramic plate with inscriptions, as well as depict a graphic and very detailed picture. We look at examples of such decor in the next selection of photos.

For work you will need:

  1. Any degreaser and cotton pads;
  2. Felt pens of different colors and thickness of the rod.

painting technique

  • Before you start painting on the dishes, do not forget to degrease the surface.
  • The main rule - try to draw lines and outlines of the picture with small, frequent strokes - so you are less likely to make a mistake.
  • Also try to draw from the general to the specific.

  • Pre-outline the contours of the picture, if necessary, use a template or stencil.
  • Most markers dry in 24 hours, do not require firing, and are dishwasher safe.

Video lesson: stained glass painting

And finally, it was the turn of the stained-glass painting of the plates. This is a slightly more complicated technique for painting on dishes due to the paint itself - as already noted, stained glass paints are liquid, and therefore they are often filled with contours.
