Compact cameras with large sensors

Thumbelina. Choosing a camera with a 1'' sensor

Nikon's initiative was met with benevolent bewilderment. It was clear that this size of the matrix allows you to make cameras smaller, optics - more compact and simpler, and the system itself as a whole - cheaper. However, the stubborn laws of physics forced these cameras to exist normally in only one single niche - budget solutions for amateur photography.

Four years later, we can say that Nikon's experience with mirrorless cameras on a 1 '' matrix turned out to be relatively successful - the devices sell well, have already changed half a dozen generations, have developed into three lines and even got a competitor-follower in the person of the all-pervading Samsung.

Nikon 1 V1 - world's first 1" sensor camera

However, the real merit of Nikon turned out to be different: by choosing the size of 1 ″, the company unexpectedly brought to the market a very successful technological element - a matrix that is quite cheap, quite convenient and gives a fairly high-quality picture. With one - true - clarification: for the amateur segment.

To date, 28 cameras have been produced on the basis of a 1 '' matrix, two of them under the premium brands Hasselbled and Leica, and 12 with interchangeable lenses.

Even premium brands recognized the matrix of size 1 "" as "their"

The remaining 14 cameras with a 1 '' matrix are models with non-replaceable lenses. Unlike strictly budget mirrorless cameras, they can be divided into three groups. Ultrazooms - cameras with optics, the focal range of which exceeds the value of 199 millimeters EGF. Compacts - compact cameras with transfocal optics of the universal range. Prosumers are the same compacts, but with fast transfocal optics.

What is nice (for buyers), in each of the groups there is competitive fight and choice. Activated in the field of quality compacts, Canon opposed Sony in every niche. It is the choice of successful cameras, regardless of the brand, that we decided to devote this article to.

Ultrazooms

In the group of ultrazooms with a matrix of 1 '' size, there are now five devices from three companies.

In particular, the unique “just a camera” Canon XC10, about which . Recall that Canon created this device in accordance with the concept of DSMC (Digital Still and Motion Camera), in which the manufacturer seeks to combine the convenience of photo and video shooting in one product.

Canon XC10

Canon XC10 turned out to be an interesting camera, although without flaws. The device has a good range of focal lengths and a comfortable design. You can connect an external microphone to it, the device supports two memory cards and records video in Ultra HD format. However, from the point of view of the photographer, the model is completely unreasonably deprived of the ability to record shots in RAW format. Well, one more complaint - not too impressive aperture at the maximum focal length (by the way, not too large - 241 mm EGF). V this moment Canon XC10 costs about 150 thousand rubles.

The remaining four cameras seem to be grouped into a clear hierarchy in terms of focal length range, aperture, design and price.

Canon PowerShot G3X

So, in terms of versatility, it is noticeably ahead of the Canon PowerShot G3X (), whose lens covers focal lengths from 24 to 600 mm EGF. One step behind him Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 with a range of 25-400 mm EGF. And Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 II with a range from 24 to 200 claim the title of "ultrasounds" already with a big stretch.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10

But in terms of aperture ratio, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 () and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 II () optics are ahead by a wide margin - F / 2.8 and no compromises in the form of a drop with increasing focal length. At Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000, aperture "floats" from F / 2.8 to F / 4. And for the Canon PowerShot G3X, it drops from the same F / 2.8 to F / 5.6.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 II

The cameras vary greatly in design and capabilities, however, we admit that the Canon PowerShot G3X looks the least impressive. Of the interesting features, only a touch-sensitive information display with a swivel mechanism and a microphone port can be distinguished. In the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10, an electronic viewfinder is added to this “wealth” (although the display is not touch-sensitive here). The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 II are best with functionality and design. The first, in addition to the swivel display, high-quality (2.36 megapixels) viewfinder and microphone jack, can offer video recording in Ultra HD format, and the second device will add to this high speed burst shooting.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000

Summing up all the above with monetary calculations, we list the devices with their prices: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 - about 55 thousand rubles, Canon PowerShot G3X - 56 thousand, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 - 63.5 thousand and Sony Cyber-shot DSC -RX10 II - about 95 thousand rubles.

Compacts

The niche of compacts with a matrix of 1 ″ size is expected to see significant changes in the near future. With the announcement of the PowerShot G9X in mid-October, Canon is trying to break Sony's monopoly that has been established here since 2012. The first results of the struggle can be summed up after the New Year (Canon PowerShot G9X will go on sale in November), however, even now we can make some predictions.

When the Canon PowerShot G9X hits the shelves, it will be up against the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II as competitors. The devices appeared in 2012 and 2013, respectively, and during their presence on the market they managed to noticeably cheaper. Currently, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 costs 33 thousand rubles, and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II costs 40 thousand. Canon's quoted price for the PowerShot G9X is $530. With all the complexity of exchange rate forecasts, it can be assumed that the camera will cost in Russia from 34 to 42 thousand rubles. That is, on the price scale will be between Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II.

Canon PowerShot G9X

Before continuing, let's briefly list the differences between the two Sony devices. Firstly, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II has a back-illuminated sensor (BSI-CMOS) that allows you to achieve a better signal-to-noise ratio at high ISO values. Secondly, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II has a proprietary connector for connecting an external flash or an electronic viewfinder. Thirdly, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II information display is attached to the body with a swivel mechanism. Fourth, more new camera has a built-in Wi-Fi module with NFC function and can be synchronized with smartphones. Both Sony devices use a fixed lens with a range of 28 - 100 millimeters EGF and a floating aperture of F / 1.8 - F / 4.9. The dimensions of the cameras are very similar: 102x58x36 mm for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 and 102x58x36 mm for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II.

Dimensions Canon PowerShot G9X - 98x58x31 millimeters. At the moment, this is the smallest camera on a 1 '' matrix. However, although the model belongs to the class of compacts, it is rather strange to choose it only for its dimensions.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100

The most significant disadvantage of the Canon PowerShot G9X compared to Sony cameras is the smaller range of focal lengths: from 28 to 84 millimeters EGF. Of course, millimeters in the “tele” position are easily “increased” by simply cropping the finished photo - since the resolution of 20 megapixels allows such procedures to be carried out. But ... a fact is a fact: Canon optics are somewhat worse than those of Sony and Carl Zeiss.

Otherwise, the Canon PowerShot G9X tries to match the price and balances between the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II in terms of performance. So, his matrix is honest BSI-CMOS, which allows you to hope for good detail and low “noise” at high ISO values. The camera is not able to use an external flash, there is no viewfinder either. The information display of the Canon PowerShot G9X is touch-sensitive, high-quality - but tightly fixed on the back of the case. With the Wi-Fi module, NFC technology and synchronization with smartphones, the device is all right - the camera was released in 2015, when these options became almost standard. If you try to find something unique that distinguishes the Canon PowerShot G9X from the competition, then it will turn out to be ... Timelaps slow motion video mode.

As we can see, the Canon PowerShot G9X looks pretty average in terms of formal features. If the camera had to compete only with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100, perhaps everything would be fine. However, the presence on the market of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II, whose characteristics are preferable (despite the considerable age of the camera), makes the question of the survival of the new product a question of its price. We hope our price predictions for the Canon PowerShot G9X are too pessimistic. And the device will have a chance to succeed.

The topic of choosing a compact camera (soap dish) has always been and will be relevant. This is one of the most popular classes of photographic equipment and the demand for inexpensive, small in size and lightweight cameras has been, is and will always be.

Compact devices have come a long way since their introduction to the market, turning from a clumsy "brick" with a few buttons, a small LCD screen and an eye lens into a full-fledged gadget with functionality comparable to James Bond "devices" (at least from from early episodes). An insane amount of megapixels, a huge zoom, the ability to shoot FullHD and even 4K video, GPS, wireless data transfer, the ability to directly publish photos to the Internet without a computer - if I had been told 15 years ago that such a wonderful thing could be bought for as little as $ 300, I I would at least not believe it. And it still sounds tempting, doesn't it?

A bit of history, or "five-year plan in 4 years!"

As you know, any technology develops in steps. Each new step is some kind of revolutionary innovation that causes a noticeable increase in the consumer qualities of the product. This is followed by some lull - manufacturers are gaining experience and preparing for the next revolutionary leap. This concept is quite applicable to the niche of digital photography. This is how soapboxes and DSLRs have evolved - though they came from different starting points, but now they are much closer to each other than ever before.

The first revolutionary leap was in itself the appearance of inexpensive digital soap dishes on the market. This happened around the beginning of the 2000s. Not, digital cameras were sold before, but in terms of their characteristics they could not compete even with film soap dishes, but were very immodest. By the beginning of the 2000s, the resolution of digital camera matrices exceeded 1 megapixel, and the price of most models fell below the psychologically important mark of $ 1,000. Yes, digital cameras were expensive, but the almost zero cost per frame (compared to film) contributed to the very rapid growth in the popularity of digital cameras.

The Olympus C-860L had a 1.3 megapixel sensor and cost about $1,000! (year 2000)

With the further development of technology and the growing need of the market, classes and subclasses began to form - ultra-cheap pocket devices (for example, Genius, Mustek), "ordinary" soap dishes, "advanced" soap dishes with a large aperture lens, "super zooms" - devices with 8-10 multiple optical zoom (sometimes more).

Sony Cybershot F828 - to call this monster a compact, and, moreover, a soap dish, the language does not turn. But at its core - a compact, albeit very powerful for its time! (2004)

The second revolutionary breakthrough was the appearance of the video function in the camera - at first in very low resolution, with a low frame rate, sometimes even without sound, but this was the beginning of the end of consumer video cameras. Until the video resolution approached 1280 * 720 / 25fps, experts unanimously stated - “take only a video camera to shoot video.” Now there are probably no such experts left. Cameras have confidently ousted amateur video cameras from the segment of home amateur video and the demand for the latter is kept, rather, “by inertia”. Now, probably, any camera for 20 thousand rubles shoots better video quality than a video camera for 20 thousand rubles.

Samsung NV24HD - one of the first cameras to shoot HD video 1280 * 720p (2008)

And, finally, the third breakthrough is the arrival of large-sized matrices in the segment of soap dishes. In parallel with this, soap dishes have gained the ability to use interchangeable lenses - this is how mirrorless cameras or, as they are also called, “system cameras” appeared. However, along with this, another class of compact devices was born - compacts with non-replaceable, but high-quality optics and a matrix comparable in size to a SLR matrix. The quality of the photos, respectively, is also comparable to the DSLR.

Sony Cybershot RX100 is one of the first truly compact cameras
with an inch matrix and a fast lens (2012)

Did you notice a pattern? Every 4 years, some small but revolution takes place in the segment of soap dishes. With 2016 just around the corner, I wouldn't be surprised if the photography industry comes up with some nice new surprise.

What is a "soapy" picture and why is it bad?

You have probably seen the phrase "soapy picture" on the forums. Usually this phrase carries a disparaging connotation, being an antonym to the words "artistic", "noble", "plastic", "painting", etc. which are often used by owners of DSLRs with top-end optics when they are measured by a friend in front of a friend with their equipment :)

If we discard emotions, the "soapy picture" has the following features:

  • High noise level in evening photos;
  • Insufficiently "smooth" color rendition - rough rendering of shades in the area of bright lights and deep shadows.
  • Always a large depth of field in photographs, no bokeh in the portrait;

The last point is the biggest problem, because of which photos taken with a soap dish look "flat". front and background they look equally sharp. Blurring can only be achieved when shooting at very close range with an open aperture. Something like "cat portraits". There are a lot of such photos on photo equipment review sites and they are often accompanied by comments - "who said that a soap dish cannot blur the background?" :)

That's all the Sony RX100 is capable of in terms of blur, with an inch sensor and aperture of 1:1.8 at the short end. In addition to the modest result, there are noticeable distortions in proportions when shooting point-blank with a wide-angle lens. As the zoom increases, the aperture decreases and the minimum focusing distance increases, resulting in less blur.

With "kotofoto" everything seems to be clear. And how are things with the present portrait photography. The following examples illustrate the difference between the two machines. The first example is an m4/3 mirrorless camera with a kit lens (top cameras will give the same result) and a full-frame DSLR with a fast aperture.

"Soap Picture"

"Not soap picture"

But, in fact, on the bokeh and blur, the white light did not converge like a wedge. It is quite possible to take pictures beautiful portraits and without bokeh, the main thing is to choose a suitable background. There are genres in which a large depth of field is only beneficial, for example, landscape, travel photography. That is, listening to those who foam at the mouth proves that there is no life without bokeh should be done with caution - everyone has their own tasks, it is quite possible that you don’t really need this bokeh! In any case, if you approach photography wisely, then even with an inexpensive soap dish you can get a decent result.

About the benefits of large matrices

One of the most important parameters of a camera is the physical size of the sensor. The larger the sensor, the more “artistic” photography this camera can potentially provide. Artistry means smooth color reproduction, low noise level, good picture quality when shooting without a flash - for example, at home in the light from a window, the ability to shoot with acceptable quality in difficult conditions - in a cafe, in the evening on the street, in a theater, etc. . A particularly good addition to the "large" matrix is the lens.

The photo was taken with a Micro 4/3 mirrorless camera with a " " whale lens in the theater lobby without a flash. Because of high ISO detail and contrast have decreased, but in general the picture looks nicer and more natural than it would be with a flash in the forehead. A soap dish with a fast lens and a matrix of 1/1.7" or larger will provide a comparable result.

The best compact devices - with a matrix of 1" and more

If we consider devices only with non-replaceable optics, then the most the best choice there will be a camera inch matrix. There are devices with larger matrices, such as APS-C format and even FullFrame, but you can’t call them compact anymore - neither in size nor in cost. Bright representatives of the "inch" segment are Sony Cybershot cameras of the RX family, there are Panasonic and Canon cameras - these devices are distinguished by a combination of a good matrix, a high-aperture lens and a relatively compact size - such devices can easily fit in the chest pocket of a jacket. Cameras of this class could be called without exaggeration the best choice, if not for their cost - it is rarely less than 30,000 rubles. But if you are ready to pay that kind of money for a compact device and are sure that you do not need interchangeable lenses, this will be a very competent choice. The device will serve you for many years without a hint of obsolescence.

Solid middle class - devices with a matrix 1/1.7", 2/3"

The class below are compact devices with a matrix 1/1.7 and 2/3 inches. Their matrix is smaller in size, however, it contains fewer megapixels, that is, in terms of their "artistic" indicators, these devices, if inferior to "inch" compacts, are not much. Some models from this segment have interesting features. For instance, Panasonic Lumix LX7 has a 1:1.4 aperture lens at the short end. In practice, this manifests itself in the good (by soap standards) quality of photographs taken in low light. At the same time, the LX7 is quite compact and will not bother you with its size and weight while walking light (I almost bought the LX7 myself as a second device, but it seemed to me not very convenient in terms of ergonomics).

The Panasonic Lumix LX7 compact has the most fast lens in its class (1:1.4 on the short end). With this device, you can shoot an evening city without a tripod with more or less acceptable quality. Unfortunately, now this model is out of production, and it has no newer analogue in this class, the LX series has moved into the "inch" class, having considerably risen in price (model LX1000, see the previous paragraph)

Another interesting device with a 2/3 inch matrix is Fujifilm X30. It may not boast of ultra-compact dimensions, but the X-Trans 2/3 ”matrix in combination with a high-quality lens provides a very nice picture both in color and clarity. I will not advise this camera to anyone and everyone, you need to feel it live and get used to its features, but there are enough of them ...

Fujifilm X30 boasts not only good technical specifications, but also stylish appearance, a large number of manual controls - this will be appreciated by experienced amateur photographers who prefer to set shooting parameters manually. For beginners, this feature, on the contrary, can scare away. The camera is more suitable for leisurely shooting in RAW format. Jpeg quality is not the best forte x30.

The main disadvantage of the Fujifilm X30 is its high price. For almost the same money, you can buy a device with interchangeable lenses and Fujifilm X-M1 Kit with an APS-C matrix, which surpasses the X30 in many ways, but loses in compactness.

Among the compacts with a 1/1.7-inch matrix, there are other quite worthy devices from Canon, Nikon, Olympus. They all have their own characteristics - both positive and negative. Owners Nikon P7800 note the good image quality and functional controls, but complain about the slow operation of the camera, Canon G16- has a good zoom for its class, but the optics wash the edges. Olympus XZ-2 gives good color reproduction, but autofocus sometimes lives its own life. That is, no matter where you dig, there is a complete compromise all around. It is this point of view that is popular magazines and online publications. But this opinion, in my opinion, is very one-sided. Even if the person who wrote the review of the camera has extensive experience in photography, it is impossible to “feel” the camera in 1-2 shooting days, learn to see its real pluses and compensate for the minuses. From my own experience, I can say that having properly understood the controls and functions of the device, as well as knowing the basic principles of artistic photography, a good result can be achieved. with absolutely any camera from the designated category. The main thing is not to demand the impossible from the camera, not to "force" it, forcing it to solve obviously impossible tasks.

If compromise solutions are not for you, please buy a top-end DSLR with a couple of fast lenses (but be prepared to carry 3-4 kilograms of equipment on your hump).

"Mainstream" - cameras with a matrix of 1 / 2.3 "price up to 15,000 rubles

"Long Range Artillery"

Another subspecies of compact devices is ultrazooms. Ultrazooms come in both large inch matrices and smaller matrices. The larger the matrix, the closer the picture quality to the SLR, but the higher the price. "Top" ultrazooms are noticeably more expensive than junior DSLRs in the basic configuration and not every amateur photographer can afford. Ultrazooms with "small" matrices are comparable in cost to "ordinary" top-end compacts, they make it possible to "zoom" everything and everything, but in terms of the technical quality of the picture, they are noticeably behind devices with a low zoom ratio, but a large matrix. Devices with a 1 / 2.3 "matrix (which is the majority of ultrasonics) have a higher noise level, a lower working ISO, fine textures are drawn less qualitatively, the edges of objects look rough and the colors themselves are not so juicy. I would recommend buying an ultrasonic only if you're really sure you'll find a use for 30x, 40x, or even 60x zoom.

"Good cheap"

The most affordable are pocket size soap dishes with a small zoom. Models in this segment great amount, but to compare them with each other in order to identify "the most best camera up to 15,000 rubles "does not make sense - all these cameras have very similar characteristics and the quality of their photos is almost the same. When choosing, you should consider only ease of use, flash range, battery capacity, as well as subjective "like / dislike".

What brand of camera do you prefer - Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, maybe Samsung?

If the camera is bought as a "photo recorder", then, by and large, there is no difference in the manufacturer. All soap dishes for the same price have comparable characteristics - if someone is better in something, then for sure, in something worse, and on average - the difference is zero.

Canon and Nikon have long established themselves as reliable and trusted brands. There is a historical opinion that Nikon is more accurate in auto mode, while Canon has misses in white balance (often yellow) and exposure (prone to overexposure). Personally, I did not have the opportunity to test this theory on soap dishes, but for younger DSLRs, in my opinion, this statement is quite true. So, if you need a good machine gun, of these two brands, I would choose Nikon for myself.

Sony cannot boast of such rich history in photo business, nevertheless produces quite worthy products. Personally, I have a controversial attitude towards Sony DSLRs (there are reasons for that), but in terms of compact devices, I would put this brand at the head of the top three. Even inexpensive Sony compact cameras shoot well in auto mode (tested from our own experience), and older models, in addition to good functionality, also have thoughtful controls.

Olympus cameras are not so popular with our customers, but they are quite interesting nonetheless. The main feature of Olympus is its "warm" color rendering. I don’t know how it is on soap dishes, but on the m4 / 3 mirrorless camera I felt it. And this is not "carrot yellow", as with a knocked down white balance, but a barely perceptible increase in orange-red tones. When shooting outdoors, the Olympus captures skin tones quite well, but at home under flash or light bulbs, color reproduction is not so good. Before buying an Olympus, you should get to know it better and decide whether you will get along or not.

I am of two minds about Samsung cameras. It seems that everything is fine in terms of characteristics, the functionality is wider than that of competitors for the same price, but in fact it turns out that the photos are inferior in quality to other devices - the noise level is higher, the post-processing artifacts (the so-called "watercolor") are more noticeable. Although, if the camera is needed in order to "take pictures and share in contact", Samsung is quite suitable. For other tasks, I would look towards Canon, Nikon, Sony.

Below are a few models that I would recommend paying attention to when choosing a versatile and inexpensive camera without pretensions to artistic photography. They look, stand and shoot almost the same - choose according to the battery capacity :)

The quality of photos provided by these cameras is, let's say, a compromise - when printing 10 * 15, it does not differ much from photos taken on a good smartphone. Significant advantages of the above cameras over smartphones are a good zoom and a more powerful flash. With a decrease in the price bar, the characteristics of the camera converge with the camera of a smartphone, and in the region of 5-6 thousand rubles, a situation occurs that a smartphone with a built-in flash looks like a more practical acquisition - at least it loses a little in the quality of photos (and even then not always!), But always with you.

"Good camera for creative shooting for 5000 rubles"

Sometimes I am asked to advise "a device for a creative, but not rich person" worth up to 5,000 rubles. Naturally, the choice is made from the cheapest category of soap dishes in the hope of finding some kind of "magic camera" better than competitors for the same price. To this I can only say one thing - even if device A for "4990 rubles for a promotion" has slightly better characteristics than device B for the same price "without a promotion", then this difference is almost always within the margin of error. And for creative shooting, neither one nor the other apparatus is suitable. It's like shooting a feature film on a car DVR.

The only reasonable way out is to go to Avito and look for an old digital SLR, for example, Canon EOS 350D or Nikon D40. For 5000 rubles it is difficult, but you can find not a new, but a working version of a camera with a whale lens. Only this will make it possible to somehow realize creative ideas.

A large matrix allows you to achieve the highest detail, get high-quality frames in low light, provides a wide dynamic range, the ability to work with bokeh. Therefore, all system cameras (both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras) are equipped with 1-inch or more format matrices. However, they involve the purchase of lenses, flashes and other equipment.

An alternative option is modern compact cameras. Many of them have large sensors that can produce a bright and sharp image even in low light conditions. How to choose a compact with a large matrix? We have prepared a selection of current models of 2017.

Compact Canon cameras with a large matrix

Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II

Budget cameras with large sensors are a rare class of photographic equipment, because the larger the sensor, the more expensive the camera. Typically, inch sensors are installed in compacts. They are not as large, but can provide excellent image quality. One of the most affordable cameras with an inch matrix - . It has a 20MP CMOS sensor.

The lens has a large aperture (F2 at wide angle) and a 3x optical zoom. At wide angle, its field of view is equivalent to 28mm on full-frame cameras, which is sufficient for most tasks. This viewing angle is approximately equal to the viewing angle of smartphone lenses.

The screen is touch-sensitive (you can focus and shoot with one touch), but not swivel. However, if you are not a blogger and are not fond of selfies, this will not be a minus.

The built-in optical stabilizer with an efficiency of 3.5 exposure stops will protect you from blurry shots, while fast autofocus and fast burst shooting (8.2 frames per second) will allow you to use the camera even in dynamic reportage shooting.

The control is convenient, all the usual automatic and semi-automatic modes are implemented here, manual mode. In conditional shortcomings, we write the absence of a viewfinder. However, the screen copes well even with shooting in bright daylight. Plus, the viewfinder would increase the dimensions of the camera. Its size is 98×58×31 mm, weight is only 206 grams!

The Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II is great as an everyday camera, and the USB charging feature means you don't have to carry a separate charger. Like all compacts, the battery of the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II runs out pretty quickly: on a single charge, you can get about 235 frames in normal and 355 in eco mode.

Video capabilities are standard: Full HD at up to 60 frames per second. Clips are recorded only in automatic mode.

Using NFC-enabled Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the machine connects to a smartphone, wireless printer, and cloud storage CANON iMAGE GATEWAY.

The Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II is an affordable and versatile large sensor compact.

There are the necessary automatic functions, and at the disposal of an advanced photographer - manual settings.

Another advantage is a wide-angle fast lens with a 4.2x zoom. At wide angle, it gives a 24mm-equivalent field of view and has an aperture of F1.8, and at maximum zoom we have a 100mm lens with aperture of F2.8. The built-in ND filter limits the amount of light passing through the lens when shooting in bright sunlight and when working at slow shutter speeds.

In addition, the lens is equipped with an effective image stabilization system (up to 4 stops of exposure), which is useful during low-light shooting and video recording.

In terms of dimensions, the device is slightly thicker and heavier than the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II: size - 105.5 × 60.9 × 42 mm, weight - 319 grams.

The device allows you to shoot at 8 frames per second, autofocus is fast and tenacious.

There is Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth support, remote shooting is available. The camera can be connected to another camera to share pictures, to a wireless printer, PC, cloud storage.

Video is recorded in Full HD at 60 frames per second. All manual exposure and white balance settings are available.

The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II delivers maximum features, a swivel screen, an excellent fast lens with a reasonable zoom ratio in a compact body for relatively little money. The camera will please a beginner photographer, blogger and even a professional looking for a second camera.

Canon PowerShot G3 X

Before us is a compact with a large matrix and zoom. True, it can be called a compact only conditionally. This is the classification: since a fixed lens is installed on the camera, then this is a compact. not one of those cameras that can get lost in your pocket. It weighs 745 grams due to the versatile 25x zoom lens with a focal length range of 24-600mm (equiv.).

At its minimum focal length, it's a wide-angle lens that can capture landscape, group photos, or close-up selfies. At maximum focal length, this is a super telephoto lens capable of showing close-up even very distant and small objects. Aperture for a lens of this class is also quite good: from F2.8 at the short end to F5.6 at maximum zoom. Effective optical stabilization is especially important when shooting at long focal lengths. The built-in "stub" dampens camera vibrations and saves up to 3.5 exposure steps.

The tilting touch screen allows you to take one-touch shots from non-standard angles. The only pity is that it does not rotate into a selfie position.

The Canon PowerShot G3 X is easily mistaken for a system camera. It has a grippy handle, like a DSLR. It contains a battery. Its resource is enough for 335 frames. Not a bad indicator of autonomy for this class of cameras!

Ergonomics are top notch. The camera is suitable for both advanced photographers and beginners. Unlike previous compacts, the Canon PowerShot G3 X has a hot shoe that can accommodate not only a powerful external flash, but also an electronic viewfinder (sold separately), which will be convenient when shooting in bright sunlight.

There is a Wi-Fi module with NFC and Bluetooth support.

Canon PowerShot G3 X / (65535) SETTINGS: ISO 800, F5, 1/60s

The device records video in Full HD resolution at up to 60 frames per second. Supports manual settings for video recording. By the way, there is not only a microphone input, but also a headphone output. The only thing missing is 4K and "flat" profiles to facilitate post-processing.

Canon PowerShot G3 X is a godsend for those who need a megazoom with a large matrix (not necessarily compact).

Sony compact cameras with a large matrix

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II

Sony pioneered the production of large sensor compact cameras. Today there are 5 cameras. not a novelty, but it is quite relevant in 2017, the manufacturer releases it in parallel with newer models, because it offers excellent features for relatively little money.

The camera has a 3.6x zoom with a focal length range of 28-100mm (equiv.). That is, we have a moderate wide-angle at minimum zoom and a good telephoto lens that can shoot at long distances at maximum zoom. At the minimum focal length, the lens has an enviable aperture - F1.8. When zooming, it drops down to F4.9. The lack of aperture at a large zoom is easily compensated by the effective optical stabilization of SteadyShot.

DSC-RX100M2 SETTINGS: ISO 160, F5, 1/30s, 28.0mm equiv.

DSC-RX100M2 SETTINGS: ISO 800, F4.9, 1/125s, 100.0mm equiv.

The device focuses confidently even in low light, and the continuous shooting speed reaches 10 frames per second.

The swivel 3-inch screen provides freedom in choosing the shooting point. Rotate it to the position for shooting self-portraits will not work. By the way, the screen has a very high resolution - 1228800 pixels.

Among other devices of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II series, it is distinguished by the presence of a multi-interface jack, in which you can install both powerful system flashes and additional accessories (for example, an external microphone).

There is a fully automatic mode, and a lot of scene programs, and manual and semi-automatic modes.

Video recording capabilities are also on the level: Full HD at up to 60 frames per second.

All wireless features are in place. With NFC-enabled Wi-Fi, you can shoot remotely or download images to your mobile device. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II will please the photographer with excellent photo quality and reliable assembly. A good balance of price and features makes it a very attractive purchase!

DSC-RX10M3 SETTINGS: ISO 640, F4, 1/250 s, 600.0 mm equiv.

The camera is charged at the level of top-end DSLRs: thoughtful ergonomics, comfortable grip, all modes from auto to manual, useful functions such as exposure bracketing. In terms of continuous shooting speed, it surpasses most SLR cameras - 14 frames per second! In the electronic shutter mode, ultra-fast shutter speeds up to 1/32000 s are available, which will allow you to “stop” even the fastest movement. There is an inclined display with a resolution of 1228800 dots, a high-quality electronic viewfinder.

The Sony DSC-RX10 III delivers a video experience that is unique in its class. The camera records video in 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. The device is also ready for professional use: at the disposal of the user S-Gamut/S-Log2, Zebra function, direct output via HDMI, time code/data bit, gamma data display, recording control, dual recording mode, marker. The Multi Interface Shoe allows you to install an external microphone, video light or flash. Available shooting with the effect of time dilation. In HD format, shooting at 960 frames per second is supported, and in Full HD - 280 frames per second.

The price tag may seem too high. But how many cameras on the market are capable of recording 4K video with an S-Log profile and have all the professional features, and even with a 25x fast zoom in the kit? It turns out that the Sony DSC-RX10 III is quite budget solution, for example, for a TV journalist. By the way, you can save a little by choosing the Sony DSC-RX10 II model. It has a smaller zoom ratio.

Cameras with an ultrazoom and a large matrix are a fairly common class of photographic equipment, but if you need a powerful tool for recording video, pay attention to the Sony DSC-RX10 III.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100M5

This is the latest large-sensor compact camera in the RX100 series. It implements the best practices, and also has the ability to record 4K video. The case is metal, weighs 299 grams.

A 20.5-inch back-illuminated sensor (BSI CMOS) is installed here, which provides even more high quality pictures at high sensitivity.

The focal length range is 24-70 mm (equiv.). The aperture of the lens at the minimum focal length is F1.8, and at the maximum it is F2.8. A wide field of view will allow you to capture beautiful landscapes, photograph in tight spaces and make great group photos.

Hidden on the top panel is a handy built-in flash and viewfinder.

The screen is not touch, but has a convenient inclined design. It can also be rotated to a selfie position.

Continuous shooting speed - 25 frames per second. This speed is not available. SLR cameras. Due to the large buffer, the camera can "shoot" in long bursts.

The camera records video in 4K resolution (30 frames per second) in S-Log2 and S-Log3 profiles. It implements all auxiliary functions ("Zebra", timecode, separate video recording). The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100M5 is one of the most affordable cameras to date offering this level of video recording capability.

The camera also has a few limitations. The first is relatively short battery life. On average, one battery is enough for 220 frames or 110 minutes of video recording. Secondly, when recording 4K video for a long time, overheating is possible. However, these problems can be easily solved by taking additional batteries with you and letting the device rest for a while between video recordings.

The device is suitable for anyone who needs a compact gadget with professional opportunities. It can play the role of a photographer's "notebook", plus it's the perfect tool for a vlogger.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1RM2

The size of the matrix of this camera is equal to the frame of the film, matrices of the same size are placed in top-end SLR and mirrorless cameras. Sony is the only manufacturer that makes it possible to capture full frame footage in a compact way.

And the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II.

Dimensions - 113.3 × 65.4 × 72.0 mm, weight - 480 grams. The device is equipped with a 42.3-megapixel CMOS-matrix with back light.

It has a fixed lens with a focal length of 35 mm and aperture of F2.

The matrix has 399 phase focus sensors that provide fast and accurate focusing. The burst shooting speed is not so high and is 5 frames per second.

The camera has thoughtful ergonomics, a tilting display and a convenient electronic viewfinder.

Connects to the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1RM2 via the Multi Interface Shoe external flash(not built-in) or other accessory.

Of course, not everyone can afford such a premium compact with a large matrix. However, if you want to have only the best, then the choice is obvious!

Fujifilm compact cameras with large sensor

If Canon relies on compacts with an inch matrix, then Fujifilm go further and offer the buyer devices with an APS-C format matrix. It is larger, so it provides better image quality, more confident performance in low light. However, they are still far from the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1RM2 ...

A large matrix entails an increase in the lens. To keep the design compact, the engineers had to equip the cameras with fixed focal length lenses. We've seen this somewhere before, haven't we?

Fujifilm X70

I can’t believe that there is a very large matrix inside this baby! The manufacturer tried to cut off all optional options. The result is an impressive compactness and a relatively affordable price. Here is the traditional Fujifilm retro design, metal case. Dimensions - 112.5 × 64.4 × 44.4 mm, weight - 340 grams. The Fujifilm X70 is equipped with a wide-angle prime lens with a focal length of 18.5mm (28mm equiv.). Aperture F2.8 for a fix is small, but it is very light.

The camera has a proprietary X-Trans CMOS II sensor with a resolution of 16.3 megapixels. The forte of Fujifilm cameras is advanced color work.

Fujifilm X70 has all the manual settings and the proprietary Advanced SR AUTO automatic mode, which recognizes the type of scene being shot and adjusts all parameters.

The model has a standard set of wireless capabilities: via Wi-Fi, you can connect to a mobile device and transfer pictures to it, shoot from a distance. From additional features- printing photos on a wireless printer, autosaving pictures on a PC, taking photos with geotagging using a GPS receiver in a smartphone or tablet.

Recording capabilities do not promise surprises: Full HD at up to 60 frames per second. Support for 4K format would not hurt, because the Fujifilm X70 will potentially be of interest to bloggers: good color for photos and videos without processing, a convenient screen, and amazing compactness.

So it's classy and compact camera, capable of providing excellent photo quality thanks to a large matrix. But the functionality of the camera is limited to a fixed lens. However, it is compact and has a relatively affordable price tag.

Fujifilm X100F

Fujifilm X100F - new camera line. Its predecessors: X100, X100S and the current X100S. Before us is a premium compact with a large matrix. The camera attracts the eye with its retro design.

It is unlikely that all the advantages of the X100F will be appreciated by novice photographers, although they will quite cope with its management. The series is aimed at fans of film rangefinder cameras. The camera allows you to apply unique film color profiles to photos and videos.

It has a unique hybrid viewfinder. It can work in optical or electronic viewfinder mode. The electronic viewfinder shows a picture with the same brightness and colors as in the photo, but in low light conditions it may give digital noise; optical provides a bright and clear picture in any conditions, but the correct exposure and white balance cannot be tracked by it.

Lens without zoom, its focal length is 35 mm (equiv.). It does not provide the usual wide viewing angle, but it conveys the perspective in much the same way as the human eye. There is no optical stabilization. The aperture is F2, so you can count not only on confident work in low light, but also on a beautiful background blur.

Due to the large matrix and advanced viewfinder, the weight of the camera is 469 grams, dimensions - 127 × 75 × 52 mm. The screen is not swivel and not touch.

What's new in the X100F compared to previous models of the 100th series? 24MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor and hybrid focus system. There are 49 phase detection sensors on the matrix, and there are 325 focus points in total! There is a joystick for quick selection of the desired focus point.

The camera allows you to record video in Full HD resolution at 60 frames per second.

The price corresponds to the premium status. But if you like beautiful and high quality things, Fujifilm X100F is a great choice!
