Carpentry workshop production ideas. Business plan for a carpentry workshop (shop). Purchase of a ready-made carpentry workshop

Small business experts are seeing growing interest in businesses that can be started at home or in the garage with a small start-up investment. There are entrepreneurs who would like to make products for sale with their own hands or with a small number of faithful assistants. This is explained by the unsuccessful experience of hiring unscrupulous workers.

An effective way to make money on “golden hands” is to open a “joinery”. But before you start starting a business, you should definitely draw up a competent business plan for a carpentry workshop. This is already a big step towards financial success.

Market and target audience analysis

15 years ago on Russian market Construction materials “gushed”: plastic windows and doors stamped from PVC and rolled steel, ruining numerous carpenters. However, in Lately The production index of wood products is steadily increasing, not only in our country, but also abroad.

Today wooden window blocks are in demand. According to this indicator, the level of 700 thousand square meters has been exceeded in the Russian Federation. meters. For other carpentry products, more than 1 million cubic meters were produced and sold. meters. Consumers are striving for environmental standards and are increasingly trusting plastic products. If in 2010 87% of residents called metal-plastic windows good choice, then in 2017 this figure dropped to 74%. That is, now the halo of potential customers for carpentry products makes up a quarter of the adult population and continues to grow.

What products does the carpentry workshop produce?

The carpentry workshop carries out deep processing of wood, turning it into a product ready for installation. Frequently ordered products include:

  • window blocks for double-glazed windows;
  • entrance/interior doors and decks to them;
  • flights of stairs;
  • verandas and gazebos (disassembled);
  • antique furniture and for baths;
  • architectural and finishing wood products;
  • boats, carts, sleighs.

The production of wooden products with low added value (such as boards, linings, bars, block houses, decking) can be afforded by large wood processing industries. A small carpentry workshop cannot withstand competition with them.

Professional skills and production technology

Whether the owner of a private carpentry works himself or hires carpenters, in any case he needs to know his business. And although those who are well versed in woodworking open their workshops, specialized books will help deepen their knowledge, for example, “An Illustrated Guide to the Production of Carpentry and Furniture Products” by S. Shumega and “Carpentry” by G. Kulebakin. L. Hayrapetyan’s reference book will help with wood glues and methods of their use.

A carpentry shop owner must also be able to read complex blueprints and learn PowerShape and CorelDRAW programs for 3D product modeling and control of CNC woodworking machines, respectively. As for professional skills, special knowledge and skills are required. Even something as simple as cutting with a circular saw requires good preparation. You also need to be able to plane edges for gluing and mill grooves with high precision.

Andrey Sivov, the owner of the carpentry shop, told the website that, in addition to windows, he had to make complex furniture for a restaurant, a real carriage, an “onion” for a rural church and much more. That is, he dealt with a fairly wide range of orders.

How to choose a room for carpentry

If an entrepreneur decides to work alone or with a couple of assistants, you can limit yourself to what you have. A small carpentry workshop requires a warm room with forced ventilation with an area of 20 to 40 square meters. meters. It must, of course, meet fire safety standards. The fact that they are betting on their own or small rented premises is explained by the unstable market, which comes to life in the summer and stagnates in the winter.

If a businessman’s goals are more ambitious, he needs to open a full-fledged production facility with a warehouse and drying facility. Is it true, start-up investment in the second case, serious ones are needed. Should be developed detailed business carpentry shop plan with calculations and design at the very first stage. This work can be done by experienced people. consulting companies who are able to calculate optimal business process.

“Most often, pensioners or people over 40 open small workshops in basements or garages. Fortunately, sound and heat insulating materials allow this. The main thing is that you don’t have to pay rent,” Andrey Sivov shared his observations. - A carpentry shop with several dozen workers is a serious business with multimillion-dollar investments. The most desperate novice businessmen who are confident in large and stable orders are going to this business.”

Staff

It would be more correct to classify a full-fledged carpentry shop as a medium-sized business. Its discovery justifies itself only when it is possible to organize continuous production, for example, window units or doors. However, large developers, for technological reasons, prefer plastic windows and factory doors, despite the growing popularity of wood. Although working from home makes the carpentry business easier, there are known successful examples, when 5-6 people worked in small carpentry shops. At the same time, the entrepreneur focused on working with contracts and searching for orders. For carpentry production you will need the following workers:

The wage fund amounts to 375 thousand rubles. If you add personal income tax, deductions to Pension Fund and other taxes, then you need to have 500,000 rubles for only one month of work, while reaching the designed capacity can take six months.

If you focus on carpentry markets for one-time contracts, which exist in any locality, it is reasonable to start alone. Then, when starting out, you don’t have to put anything into the salary fund: as much as you earned, that’s what you received.

Carpentry workshop equipment

For high-quality woodworking, you need to buy a wood moisture meter. This will allow you to purchase material with the moisture content required by GOST 24700-99 and avoid fire-hazardous drying. Such instruments are calibrated for different breeds wood: birch, pine, beech. Pocket models can be purchased for 1 thousand rubles, higher quality moisture meters cost about 10 thousand rubles.

Of course, you will need hand and power tools. Its cost for a workshop with 3 carpenters can reach 50-70 thousand rubles. What you need to buy is well described in “Carpentry” by G. Kulebakin.

You will also need machines, or at least one combined unit, which has a sawing section, a jointing unit, a thicknessing unit, a milling section and a tenoning carriage. The machine does not take up much space, is optimal for a small room, and has a relatively low price tag of 220 thousand rubles. Plus, it would be nice to order a CNC wood milling machine, but you need to take into account that good model sells for 500 thousand and above.

For equipment necessary equipment a small carpentry shop with 3 workers needs to reserve 300 thousand rubles.

Advertising

In order for clients to appear, the owner of a carpentry shop, even if he works alone, must devote time and money to advertising. Otherwise, potential buyers simply will not know about the services. It is unlikely that promoters giving away will help Flyers. It is easier and more effective to express yourself in electronic media. Every city or town has a local administration portal, where a section has been created for free ads. Advertising on building materials databases is most effective. At the entrance to a construction market or lumberyard, you should rent a few square meters for a stand. Display your products at the stand. Then you can expect calls to appear within a few days.

Total costs and payback period

For a workshop that a single master opened in his garage, you will need from 100 to 400 thousand rubles, depending on the type of equipment purchased. This will include advertising costs. A small amount of start-up costs predetermines interest in this business.

If you rent premises in an industrial complex, you must take into account at least another three months of payment for “square meters”, as well as payments for utilities and security. That is, you need to add an additional 120 thousand rubles. If you are going to hire 2 assistants, you should increase the starting investment by another 100 thousand rubles.

Joinery products, as a rule, are sold with a high added value - about 40%. With a successful start, the investment will pay off in one warm season - that is, in 6-7 months.

For a large carpentry shop, the situation looks different. The payback period depends on the size of the business: the larger the production, the further the break-even point is from the start - but the higher the income. We give approximate guidelines in the table:

Amount of investment

payback

Hall area

Owner's estimated income

"Lonely" workshop

100-200 thousand rubles

6 months

30 sq. meters

20-40 thousand rubles per month

Carpentry shop

2-4 million rubles

500-700 sq. meters

up to 250 thousand rubles per month

How to open a carpentry workshop: step-by-step plan

Since most entrepreneurs start alone or with relatives (for example, with a son or brother), it is for this format that we will write the sequence of actions for opening a carpentry business:

  1. Register as an individual entrepreneur if you plan to hire no more than 2 assistants, or as an LLC to open a carpentry shop with several dozen workers.
  2. Find a place for a carpentry workshop. If you choose a garage or basement of a house, carry out fire safety measures in accordance with the law. If you decide to rent the premises, enter into an appropriate agreement.
  3. Purchase and install equipment. It is logical to purchase wood for a specific order.
  4. Make samples of goods and place them as advertising in construction markets and lumber yards. Tell about yourself in local electronic media. This way you will be able to find clients.

Business risks

Although many articles on the RuNet say that a carpentry workshop as a business is doomed to success, in reality this is far from the case. On the Internet you can find advertisements for the sale of almost new woodworking machines, and from the first owners. Reason: “due to lack of demand.” Regardless of what environmentalists say, PVC windows and doors dominate the market.

For carpentry business seasonality is typical. Window blocks, flights of stairs and garden gazebos are usually in demand in the summer. The main risks of business in carpentry workshops are a weak order market and strong competition from large players.

Conclusion

A small carpentry workshop, open on its own “square meters”, has an excellent chance of survival, despite the dominance plastic windows, factory doors and ready-made stairs. For a “young” and full of energy pensioner, this business can indeed bring a good increase in pension.

In skillful hands, wood turns into a real work of art and is perhaps the most versatile ornamental material. Almost every person uses household items, furniture and other wood products every day. In addition, it is widely used as finishing elements for homes, offices, cafes, restaurants and other premises.

Let's look at what interesting wood products you can make with your own hands for sale, what you need to know to open own enterprise, how to equip a workshop, where to sell finished products and how profitable carpentry can be.

What can you make with your own hands from wood?

The first thing you need to do to start your carpentry business is to study consumer demand for wood items. Today there is an abundance of great amount variety of products, so the buyer has the right to choose the highest quality and original products. For this reason, you should first of all pay attention to those of them that are in short supply or are presented in minimal quantities.

As a rule, carpentry workshops specialize in certain types of products. What kinds of do-it-yourself wood products for sale can bring good income and be in great consumer demand? Let's highlight popular areas of carpentry production. These include the production of:

  • decorative elements and finishing materials for interior decoration;
  • cabinet, upholstered, office and other types of furniture;
  • window frames, doors and stairs;
  • hedges and fences;
  • garden gazebos;
  • household items (rolling pins, cutting boards, stands, boxes, etc.).

As practice shows, it is worth starting to produce wood carpentry with the production of doors (entrance and interior), window frames, furniture and stairs. With the growth of production, the range of manufactured products can be significantly expanded.

Original tables, chairs, chests of drawers, kitchen units, folding sofas, all kinds of armchairs and other products that differ from the goods presented in stores are very popular.

In addition, you can open own production joinery products that will be of high quality and original design. Here are some successful examples:

  • children's toys (constructors, steam locomotives, cars, dinosaurs, etc.);
  • icons (always at a high price);
  • musical instruments;
  • board games (chess, backgammon);
  • vases, dishes, candlesticks;
  • swings, benches, wicker furniture;
  • souvenir and esoteric products.

A profitable occupation for joiners and carpenters is the manufacture of coffins. Such products should either be cheap or have high quality workmanship and the use of expensive wood species. As in any business, in carpentry it is important to present customers with a unique selling proposition that can fully satisfy their needs.

Demand for wooden products

Wood products are in great demand and will always be popular with customers. But before you start producing joinery, you should conduct a market analysis and study consumer needs. It is important to understand that in conditions of great competition, products must be original and of impeccable quality.

As we have already said, doors, staircases and arches are in great demand. It is worth considering the possibility of producing windows, especially their multilayer versions, which externally look like modern metal-plastic products. Such products will always be in demand by customers, especially if they have excellent sound and heat insulation characteristics.

Carpentry workshop as a business

If you decide to open a carpentry business, we suggest you step by step instructions to achieve this goal.

Where to begin?

Having decided on the direction of carpentry production, it is necessary to find a place for its implementation. The premises should be spacious and dry, since wood, as you know, does not like moisture. In addition to production space, you will need places for change rooms and rest for staff, as well as an office where you can talk with customers.

Height production workshops should be about 4-5 meters in order to be able to produce large products (cabinet furniture, stairs, etc.). For a small workshop you can rent a building with total area 60-70 m², it should be taken into account that you will need to allocate space for storing blanks and finished products.

Since the specifics of carpentry production are related to the direct cutting and mechanical processing of wood, an exhaust system will be required. It is also worth paying great attention to lighting devices (most machines and other equipment operate on variable electrical network 380 V).

When the issue of workshop premises is resolved, you should register your business with the tax office. You will also need to obtain permits to carry out your activities from the fire inspectorate and from energy suppliers (electricity, water, heating, gas).

Important: Let's give examples of average prices for starting a business. To open a carpentry workshop, you will have to spend about 15-20 thousand rubles monthly on renting premises. The purchase of raw materials will cost 22-25 thousand rubles. The purchase of equipment and tools will require about 180-200 thousand rubles. About 50 thousand rubles will be needed for additional expenses and fees for energy consumption. And do not forget that the average salary of employees is 30-40 thousand rubles.

How to choose a tree?

In order for a carpentry workshop to flourish as a business, and for the products produced to be in great demand among customers, raw materials will be required High Quality. It is important to know in advance which wood will be used to make a particular product.

First of all, it is worth considering that certain requirements are imposed on lumber, they have standard sizes and GOST standards have been established for them. Wood materials can be either primary or secondary. In the first case, it is round timber, branches, whole logs and tree roots. Secondary products include plywood, timber, veneer, boards and other types of sawn products.

The choice of wood type plays an important role in the manufacture of joinery products. They are conventionally divided into soft, medium and hard according to physical characteristics. Softwoods include pine, cedar, spruce, chestnut, linden, poplar, willow, and alder. Larch, birch, beech, pear, ash, apple, elm, oak and rowan are medium soft wood. Hardwoods include white acacia, hornbeam, olive, dogwood, boxwood and others.

When choosing wood raw materials, you must first pay attention to its moisture content. The presence of various defects and the ability for so-called sap flow, which determines the degree of ripeness of the wood, are also taken into account. According to the structure, wood can be layered, straight-grained, amorphous and twisted. The quality of raw materials directly affects the woodworking process.

Important: V carpentry production soft woods are used mainly for carving, as this greatly facilitates the work of the carpenter. Hardwoods are used for the production of musical instruments, cabinet furniture, tables, chests of drawers, boats and other products.

The wood located inside the trunk is called core. This part is considered the hardest, and it is also different high density and does not rot for a long time. The layer around the core in which tree sap circulates is called sapwood. Depending on the structural features of the tree, it can be:

  • sound, which is characterized by the dark color of the wood core (apple tree, pine, oak, larch, juniper);
  • mature wood, which is characterized by the same color of the core and sapwood layer (most conifers);
  • sapwood (the center of the wood does not die).

Defective joinery products are a consequence of using wood with defects. These include rot, fungus, and wormholes, which are formed due to damage by insects. This also includes cracks that form if the wood has been overdried or stored in the cold. Wood defects also include a non-standard tree trunk shape.

What equipment will be needed?

To manufacture wood products of varying complexity, you will need a large number of machines that perform certain functions. These include:

  • circular saw;
  • jointer;
  • band saw;
  • crosscut;
  • milling;
  • Thicknesser

As it expands, it will require equipment for the carpentry workshop, such as four-sided planing, drilling and grooving, sanding machines, as well as special installations for working with veneer.

To make carpentry, you will need to purchase drills, hammers and mallets, chisels, electric planes, tape measures, jigsaws and screwdrivers, as well as all kinds of screwdrivers for working with threaded types of fasteners.

Among the equipment, it is desirable to have large tables for marking sheets of plywood and boards. It is imperative to purchase stains, paints, wood glue, varnishes, oil, self-tapping screws, bolts, screws, screws and nails of various sizes.

Advertising and sales of finished products

Since initially carpentry products are designed for mass consumers, appropriate advertising campaigns. They must reach a large number of potential buyers. To do this, you need to advertise in printed publications, on television, in transport and crowded places.

You should also talk to the managers of specialized supermarkets, shops, and construction materials markets, which are, in essence, potential customers. Today, the Internet provides entrepreneurs with unlimited opportunities to promote their products. So, to increase your income you need to declare yourself in in social networks by creating appropriate thematic groups. It wouldn’t hurt to create your own website, where the range of products will be presented (it is advisable to take professional photographs), prices, contact information And commercial offers for buyers.

An increase in sales will be facilitated by placing classified advertisements in search engines (contextual advertising on the Yandex and Google networks). As for the sale of finished products, they can be sold on the market through own store, at specialized fairs. It is also recommended to create a unique offer for furniture stores and establish a sales line.

Do I need to register an individual entrepreneur or LLC?

An officially registered business will allow you to easily manufacture joinery and sell finished products. If 2-3 hired workers work in the workshop, you can get by with registering as an individual entrepreneur, the opening of which will cost 3 thousand rubles, and the monthly payment of taxes and fees will be about 4-5 thousand rubles.

If you plan to attract a large number of employees and large-scale production, you must register the business as an LLC. This will allow you to cooperate with representatives big business, as well as participate in all kinds of tenders.

Which assortment to choose

The products offered by carpentry shops are extensive. Highlight:

  • entrance and interior doors
  • window units
  • furniture: sofas, cabinets, tables, etc.

Purchase of raw materials

When working in a carpentry workshop, a variety of raw materials are used, the selection of which depends on the type of products being manufactured and the level of financial situation of the end consumers (use expensive or budget materials).

For example, the most durable products are made from oak, and alder is excellent for making decorative furniture. An expensive product is made from walnut.

Other tree species are used depending on the type of product:

  • ash is the best option for carving
  • beech is used in the production of bent furniture

The most expensive species include mahogany and ebony. Furniture is produced from them only to order and with full prepayment. Products made from mahogany are valued when arranging business offices in expensive homes. Needles are used in the production of interior doors.

In addition to wood, the future entrepreneur needs to purchase additional consumables:

  • wood glue
  • oil

  • paints and varnishes
  • nails, screws, etc.

A separate cost item includes fittings: numerous corners, wheels, closers, handles, etc.

Personnel search

Additional staff:

  • handyman
  • sales specialist
  • Sales specialist (search and selection of clients)
  • accountant

If you want to produce non-standard products, you must additionally use the services of a designer.

Important: the process of manufacturing wood products is accompanied by a risk of injury, which is why employees must be allowed to work after they have been given safety instructions.

Purchase of a ready-made carpentry workshop

If you do not want to create your own business from scratch, you can purchase ready business. The cost depends on the region of residence.

Analyzing message boards on the Internet, the average cost of such a business is:

  • Tula - 500 thousand rubles
  • Chelyabinsk - 1 million rubles. - depends on production volumes
  • Angarsk - 350 thousand rubles.
  • Moscow - 1 million rubles.
  • St. Petersburg - 1 million rubles.

The cost of the finished case depends on the following factors:

The last factor is key. In small towns, the cost of production is lower than in megacities. At the same time, the monthly profit is also smaller, but there is a chance to become a monopolist. We have one such workshop in our city, they mainly repair furniture, although it is possible to make it to order, but such orders are given very rarely, earnings are mainly from repairs .

The need for a small carpentry shop for people who are closely involved in housework almost always exists. And if you don’t know how to build or choose a room for this object, how to plan it, and what to place inside it first, read this article to the end.

How to choose a room for carpentry

When creating a carpentry workshop within your own suburban area, it is a good idea to make sure that it is as far away from living quarters as possible. This will preserve the peace of the rest of your family and will not prevent your guests from enjoying a relaxing holiday.

The ideal location for setting up a carpentry workshop would be a separate barn, garage or specially built room. You can consider an option in which the carpentry workshop will be located in a building block container (a used product is quite suitable for the workshop, since new block containers are quite expensive). The area of the block container is a little more than 14 m². Therefore, its useful space can easily accommodate not only a workbench and a shelf with tools, but even several small carpentry machines. There will be enough space for storing wood and organizing a small painting area.

The option with a block container can be considered if you take a fairly serious approach to the arrangement of the workshop and if you have serious intentions related to the volume of work performed here. If your carpentry work is on a modest scale, then an alternative in the form of an empty garage or shed is quite capable of meeting your needs.

In order for a home workshop to meet the minimum requirements for comfort and safety, its area must be at least 6...10 m² (it all depends on the amount of equipment you plan to place in the workshop). This should be taken into account if you are going to build a special room for a workshop. If you plan to adapt an existing building of suitable size for a workshop, then use it. M a scarlet carpentry workshop can be quite convenient. N and six squares can accommodate not only the carpenter’s main tool – a carpenter’s workbench, but also a couple of the most popular machines: a sharpening machine for tools, as well as a drilling machine for wood processing, etc. And 40-50 sq.m. - this is practically a workshop.

This is what a regular FORUMHOUSE user writes about the size of the carpentry workshop.

AlekX member of FORUMHOUSE,
Moscow.

10 squares is enough... To arrange and work comfortably - from 25 squares, comfortably and impressively move with a cigar from machine to machine - from 40-50 sq.m.

And here is a photograph of the interior of his workshop, which measures 11 m².

Basic requirements for a carpenter's workshop

It is not enough to understand how to build a carpentry workshop or how to select suitable premises. When setting up a carpentry workshop, you need to remember five important factors, the presence of which guarantees convenience and safety while working inside the future premises:

  • fire safety;
  • effective sound insulation;
  • high-quality lighting;
  • proper ventilation;
  • efficient and safe heating.

Let's talk about all this in more detail.

Fire safety

To ensure fire safety, the workshop premises must have grounding. All machines and equipment should be connected to a common grounding circuit. A powder fire extinguisher, which is an essential element of a carpentry workshop, must be installed in a well-accessible place. The fire extinguisher must be rated ABC (for all flammable materials and electrical equipment) and have a capacity of 4.5 kg (10 lb). A container of sand, equipped with fire extinguishing equipment and installed near the entrance to the workshop, will give you an additional guarantee of safety.

Soundproofing

If the carpentry workshop is located near a living space, sound insulation in it is of great importance. To ensure this, you can use standard means, which include the use of special finishing materials, double-glazed windows and door structures.

Lighting

Good lighting is half the success of your carpentry workshop! This is not only comfortable for your eyes, but also necessary condition occupational safety. Indeed, in conditions of insufficient visibility, injuries when working with electric and other woodworking tools occur much more often. And in order to avoid them, in addition to general lighting in the workshop, it is necessary to use additional lighting for the workplace (machine, workbench, etc.).

When working away from natural light, it is better to use a combination lighting fixtures different spectrum. Neon fluorescent lamps - for general lighting and incandescent lamps - for additional illumination of the workplace. According to doctors, the use of the same type of lighting devices does not always have a good effect on the condition of the visual organs.

Do-it-yourself carpentry in the garage.

The electrical cable that you run into the workshop to connect electrical equipment and lighting fixtures must have a suitable cross-section to withstand heavy loads. Wiring should be placed in metal conduits or pipes to help prevent fire in the event of a short circuit.

Ventilation

Even the simplest forced ventilation installed in a carpentry workshop will make your work much more comfortable and safer. Thanks to ventilation, you will not have to inhale wood dust, which can cause irritation of the respiratory tract and even diseases.

If you plan to install woodworking machines in the workshop, then installing a suitable chip ejector is an issue that requires a mandatory solution. Otherwise, the room will always be a mess, and all efforts aimed at ensuring fire safety will not have the desired effect. After all, wood dust, scattered in large quantities in the air, can ignite like gunpowder from the slightest spark.

Heating

If you plan to work in a future workshop all year round, then heating a room is an issue that should be taken very seriously. The warm air in the workshop will have a beneficial effect on your well-being, performance and the condition of the power tool. And only in such conditions is wood able to retain its best qualities.

It makes no sense to connect such a room to centralized heating (with rare exceptions). Therefore, installing an oil heater will be considered a completely worthy way out. As an alternative, you can use heat fans or more modern infrared heaters. These devices will quickly heat a small room and, if the room is well insulated, will create a cozy microclimate inside the workshop.

Carpentry workshop layout

If, before creating a room for a carpentry workshop, you took into account the minimum requirements regarding the internal area of the facility, then you will definitely have enough space to organize its main zones:

    space for machines;

    space for a workbench and assembly table;

    racks (shelves) for tools;

    space (corner) where equipment for cleaning the workshop is stored;

    container for waste and garbage (wooden box, etc.);

    attachments for storing hacksaws, tape measures and other tools;

    hanger (wardrobe) for workwear;

    wall cabinets for small tools, fasteners and other parts;

    storage space for wood and finished products.

An assembly table, like a workbench, is an essential element when planning a carpentry workshop. Here's what one of our forum participants thinks about it.

Yuzef member of FORUMHOUSE

An assembly table is a must. The simplest one is to cut one sheet of chipboard in half (according to the layout - lengthwise or crosswise) and fold two thicknesses (fasten with screws).

It is advisable to mount large items and equipment on walls or install them near them. This will free up some of the internal space for freer movement. In order to calculate the minimum area of free space near a machine or workbench, it is necessary to multiply the area occupied by this device by 2. Tools and equipment used together must be located next to each other.

In order to save free space in workshops, some of their owners resort to little tricks: they build convenient folding workbenches. The working surface of such a device is mounted on the wall, and its unscrewing legs are stored in any convenient place. On the bottom surface of the workbench you can easily make mounts for storing a wide variety of tools.

This is the workshop layout suggested by user Sitnikoff.

I figured out the live arrangement in Visio, without the exact dimensions of the machines and equipment for the 5.6*6.2m option. Everything fits in and even more.

The room shown in the diagram has impressive dimensions, and not everyone can afford such dimensions. The general concept of arrangement of equipment and accessories shown in the figure will be clear to all interested.

But more detailed information about the proposed project. Everyone can find something useful in it. You will learn what to make a floor from in a carpentry workshop, what to build walls from, what the foundation will be like, etc.

Sitnikoff member FORUMHOUSE

For now, I’ll write about the design of the building for the carpentry workshop:

    The structure is a frame made of boards 150x50 mm. HSD 2.8m x 5.6 x 6.2. The height of the attic is 1.2 m.

    Build on a shallow strip foundation.

    Insulation - mineral wool or basalt 150 mm thick.

    Cover the outside and inside with OSB board.

    The outside of the slab is covered with clapboard.

    Floors - concrete, then EPS (50mm), warm water floor in a concrete screed.

    Floors – ceramic tiles.

    Heating is from a stove (I don’t know whether to buy a metal one or install a small Dutch oven), it is possible to connect a heated floor to the route running from the house to the bathhouse.

    The roof of the attic will be insulated in the same way as the walls, since there will be no ceiling (in case something will have to be hung or placed within reach), i.e. I am planning a dome in the workshop.

    The roof covering is metal tiles (especially since there is some reserve left after the house and bathhouse).

    The door is a metal double-leaf insulated door with a width of 120 cm (80 + 40).

    Windows – plastic double-glazed windows measuring 150 x 60 cm under the ceiling – 6 pcs.

    Window opposite the door 100x150 cm – 1 pc.

    I do not rule out the presence of skylights in the ceiling (I want light) - 4 pcs.

    Electrical equipment - 220 V in plastic boxes.

    Dust removal and ventilation system (you will probably have to place several boxes around the room to connect the tool to the dust removal system).

Basic rules for organizing space in the workshop

    Each machine, workbench and other equipment must have free access from three sides.

    The free space of the workshop should prevail in quantitative ratio over the space occupied by machines, cabinets and other items.

    The floor in the workshop must be smooth and dry, and under no circumstances should slippery materials be laid on its surface.

    The waste container must have 2 compartments (the first is for storing wood waste, the second is for storing other waste).

    Small stock drinking water Just like a fully stocked first aid kit, it should be kept in a visible place.

Remember, when working in the workshop, you should not neglect personal protective equipment - overalls, safety glasses, respirators, and so on.

Interview with entrepreneurs from Kazakhstan, father and son Vykhodtsevs

Products made from real wood add a special status to any home. And if they also contain carved elements, it is impossible to take your eyes off such beauty. Skilled carpentry masters are not afraid to get lost in a market niche: our Kazakh entrepreneur heroes Alexey and Denis Vykhodtsev from the city of Karaganda are valued by clients for their quality and individual creative approach to the work performed.

Main points of the interview:

  • Kind of activity: production of large-sized products from solid wood
  • Business locations: Kazakhstan, Karaganda
  • Occupation before starting a business: father is a worker at a plastic processing plant, son is a carpenter
  • Start date of business activity: year 2000
  • Organizational and legal form of doing business: IP
  • Initial investment amount: approximately 315,000 rubles (about $5,000) for the purchase of equipment and rent of premises
  • Source of initial capital: personal savings
  • Formula for success: Patience, my friend, patience - with it will come both skill and orders!

Denis, how to become a good and successful furniture professional? Is it necessary to receive specialized education?

Of course, this is not the most important factor! There must be a passion for the craft. The history of the development of my father Alexey Ivanovich’s skill is as follows: he worked at a factory whose activities were related to the production of plastic products. A shipment of raw materials arrived, which turned out to be good wooden boards. My father took them and thought it would be nice to cut something out. He did not put the idea aside, but, on the contrary, found special literature and tools.
I started trying. You know, it was as if my hands were just waiting for this - everything worked out! He mastered Bogorodsk carving and began receiving his first orders. We learned about talent. The management of the enterprise allocated space for a carpentry shop, where he began to seriously engage in what he loved. And I used to go to my dad when I was still in fifth grade and try to help him with something, take an interest. Naturally, when I graduated from school, I already knew my future profession. It turned out that the business became a family business.

How long has your business been in operation?

We tried to become independent since 2000. We rented premises for workshops and bought the appropriate equipment. Let’s face it, it took 12 years for us to reach our current fleet of our own machines. We started with small orders, now we specialize in large ones. We try not to stand in one place and develop.

Where did the initial capital come from?

We have not taken and do not take loans. Resources come from personal savings.

How long does it take for an activity in this area to become profitable after starting?

With modern turnover, I can say: a period of 3 to 5 years will be enough (which also depends on the factor of which building is leased). Much depends on the budget that is set aside for the purchase of machines. But again, today it is much easier to open such a business, even in a garage - there are compact models of equipment that operate on 220 volts. All you need to do is connect electricity to the room and you can start.

What range of products do you offer?

Literally everything that is made from wood. Mostly, of course, there are large orders and among the priorities are stairs. There are also various headsets. By the way, regarding the latter, there is an idea to put chairs and tables on stream, but there is likely a danger of riveting template sources and losing creativity.

When the first store selling bath items opened in the city, we received an order for the production of similar accessories - from small to large. Among these was a very interesting one - a church font in the regional village of Botakara. We make gazebos and swings for private homes. The birth of any thing (small and large) is an individual process. We are confident that our task is to make the original product special.

Raw materials are also important. Can you name some of your suppliers? Russian companies?

We prefer to buy Russian timber, but, unfortunately, we still work with resellers. We recommend the excellent Kazakh service “Yolki-palki”. We plan (when we reach continuous volume) to arrange supplies directly from Krasnoyarsk or Biysk, where reputable timber harvesters are located. The volumes will change: at a minimum, we will have to purchase a wagon, but now we are working based on specific orders.

What equipment will you need to start making stairs? Is any of the equipment Russian?

We ordered almost all the machines from the workshop in Russia. Best Brand, which can be recommended to craftsmen - a modern "Corvette". For good performance you cannot do without the following equipment:

  1. Circular saw - cuts the board lengthwise. The compact semi-automatic option is suitable for beginners.
  2. A jointer that levels planks of planks.
  3. A thickness planer (the nickname “crocodile” was coined) will come in handy for calibrating the thickness of the board.
  4. Using a milling machine we add a pattern to the plinth and frames.
  5. We use a slotting and drilling tool to punch out various holes.
  6. Grinder machine.
  7. Lathe.
  8. Compressor for painting (as the final stage of any work).
  9. This is the current minimum. Today we have 15 machines on 200 square meters.

How many workers work at the enterprise?

They are served by four people. Moreover, the constant two are my father and me. Assistants often change because it is very difficult to find people who are equally passionate about their work. (Laughs). Allowances should be made for the specifics of the activity.

By the way, about the specifics. What difficulties do you face when making stairs?

Let's start with the fact that very often you have to adapt to existing conditions. Unfortunately, they are not the best - people build houses without thinking about how other specialists will install stairs there in the future. There are standards for such objects (but why would anyone need the recommendations that have already been studied - they do whatever they want). We get perverted and figure out how to squeeze in marches with transitions.

Write down the whole process step by step.

There are three stages of such work. The first is measurements and creation of a layout. Based on the conditions, we draw what we present and offer it to the customer for approval. After approval, we begin the rough frame, which we build “from scratch” from plywood.

And already at the final stage we cover the “draft” with wood.

What material can you recommend?

The source material depends on the budget and desire of the client. And they make steps with transitions from birch plywood (the result will be durable and beautiful). Pine is popular. Do financial possibilities allow? Choose oak, walnut.
To have some specific numbers in your head, let’s calculate the direct sector by ten steps (I’ll convert it into rubles for convenience). The plywood version will cost from 66,000 rubles. Pine already costs about 85,000 rubles. Well, oak is already approaching 190,000 rubles (walnut is even more). This price arises due to the difficulty of processing the material; the rocks are hard.

The order determines our workload, so the monthly volume of work is uneven. And when the client wants a quick turnaround time, our relatives practically don’t see us.

How can you optimize your business?

In a good way, activities in a carpentry shop must be divided - some work with client base and customers, and the rest of the employees are involved in the technological process. For us, these are just thoughts out loud.

Which are the most interesting projects do you remember?

From the stairs - a spiral beauty in the sauna. Remembering other “beauties”: an expensive carved oak kitchen set with patina inclusions - it turned out to be an incredibly beautiful sight!

Are there any risks in such activities?

Certainly! The first is a possible defect in the received raw materials (even with reinsurance you cannot foresee everything). Not to mention the unscrupulous clients that exist in any business. We take a mandatory advance from customers, after payment of which we provide a rough plywood version (we are talking about stairs). It is difficult to demand one hundred percent advance payment. Having a signed contract will not provide guarantees, which is why performers sometimes have to meet yesterday’s clients in courtrooms.

Are young people willing to become carpenters?

If! I know some will disagree with me, but I will call this profession an endangered species. There is another factor - the general transition to chipboard materials, which the client also became hooked on due to their availability.

Young people do not have enough patience, which is checked very simply - we put every newcomer who comes to the grinding machine. This work is a little tedious and painstaking, but you can’t do without it. Those who really want to become a real carpenter learn to be attentive - without this you can’t get anywhere! A talented student will quickly want to master other instruments. A lot of young people simply can’t stand it and leave, even despite decent wages.

How do you increase the level of your knowledge and skills?

Alas, there are no specialized trainings or advanced training courses in Karaganda. You have to look for all the necessary information yourself (fortunately, there is the Internet) - watch videos, buy relevant magazines and literature. There is a great desire to attend the annual carpentry festival “Gathering of Craftsmen”, which takes place in Moscow. I think next year we will decide to take such a trip!

Do you have any unusual ideas or projects? Would you like to create something out of the ordinary?

What do you think of the idea of a children's playground made entirely of wood? I can just see a big hut on chicken legs, which looks like it just ran away from Baba Yaga. And my father and partner Alexey Ivanovich prefers to do artistic carving.

Finally, what advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? How can you achieve success in your chosen business?

You definitely have to love your job! Therefore, patience, perseverance, and a desire to improve skills will appear. Then any order - from small to large - will be of high quality, and your business will become in demand.
